Rajshree Thakur's directorial venture attempts to weave nostalgia and grief into a coming-of-age narrative, and while the emotional spine—a protagonist grappling with maternal loss and the weight of adolescent memory—carries genuine weight, the execution falters in translating that intrigue to screen. The film's structure, alternating between present-day introspection and flashback sequences, could have created a compelling meditation on how we mythologize our past, but instead the pacing meanders, and the transitions between timelines feel disjointed rather than revelatory. The performances are earnest, particularly in the quieter moments, yet the material never quite gives the actors enough to dig into with conviction.

Where "Purani Jeans" does find its footing is in the smaller, lived-in details of friendship—the camaraderie among the younger versions of the characters has an authenticity that occasionally transcends the screenplay's limitations. However, the central mystery surrounding Sam's tragedy and its connection to Sid's present-day reckoning is revealed with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer, undercutting what could have been a powerful emotional culmination. The film wants desperately to matter, to say something profound about growing up and loss, but it settles instead for surface-level introspection without the narrative discipline to earn its emotional beats.

The film's commercial failure—a rather devastating ₹1.86 crore return against its investment—speaks

Storyline

So basically, Sid's dealing with losing his mom, and one day at the airport he discovers someone read his old diary and thinks he's actually a talented writer. This gets him thinking about his past, so he heads back to India to sell his mom's place. But being back there opens up all these memories he's been trying to escape for years.

The story then flashes back to when Sid was younger, and he and his friends are basically fan-boying over their buddy Sam who's coming to visit. When Sam finally arrives, things get wild—they're throwing eggs at people's houses and just living it up like crazy teenagers. During all this chaos, Sid meets this girl Nayantara and immediately starts crushing on her hard. But Sam also falls for her, which creates this whole complicated love triangle situation.

As the story unfolds, we learn that Sam had a rough childhood and his relationship with his mom was really messed up. All these flashbacks are building toward something tragic in Sam's past that has shaped everything about Sid's life since then. The whole thing is basically Sid trying to figure out what really happened and coming to terms with the ghosts of his youth.
