7/10Critic Score

Anurag Kashyap's "Phantom" burns with the kind of righteous fury that audiences desperately want to feel after a national tragedy, yet it often mistakes spectacle for substance. The film follows Daniyal Khan, a disgraced soldier given a chance at redemption through a covert mission to eliminate the architects of 26/11, and there's genuine emotional weight in watching a broken man seek both revenge and restoration of his honor. Saif Ali Khan delivers a performance that oscillates between controlled intensity and raw vulnerability—you believe in his desperation, his need to matter again. However, the narrative structure, jumping between Chicago, Mumbai, London, and Pakistan, occasionally loses focus. Kashyap's direction excels in intimate moments of conflict and moral ambiguity, but the film struggles to balance geopolitical intrigue with personal stakes, leaving viewers wondering whether they're watching a revenge thriller or a meditation on institutional betrayal.

What truly haunts "Phantom" is its refusal to offer easy answers. The action sequences are competent but not groundbreaking, and some pacing issues in the second half dilute the mounting tension. Yet Kashyap asks uncomfortable questions about justice, loyalty, and the cost of vengeance—questions that linger long after the credits roll. Supporting performances from the ensemble cast anchor these philosophical quandaries in human reality rather than abstract debate. The film doesn't always succeed in weaving together

Storyline

So basically, this film kicks off with the aftermath of the devastating 26/11 attacks that shook Mumbai, and then we jump to this intense car chase happening in Chicago. Two guys get into a fight by the river, one guy ends up in the freezing water, and the other dude gets arrested for murder. But here's the twist—we flash back six months to find out what's really going on behind the scenes.

Turns out, the arrested guy isn't just some random criminal. He's actually Captain Daniyal Khan, a former soldier who's been living a pretty rough life after getting kicked out of the army. The Indian intelligence agency recruits him for a super secretive mission to track down and take out the masterminds behind those Mumbai terror attacks. They sweeten the deal by promising to restore his military rank, which would help him patch things up with his estranged father and the people he mentored.

Daniyal gets to work with his only partner, a guy named Nawaz, and they start hunting down their targets. Their first lead takes them to London where they catch up with one of the attackers at a cricket match. After breaking into the guy's place and confirming his identity, Daniyal orchestrates an explosion that takes him out, and it gets covered up as just an accident. But of course, this catches the attention of Pakistan's intelligence agency, and things start getting complicated.
