6/10Critic Score

"Phaansi Ke Baad" arrives as a film that understands the raw thrill of a man fighting a rigged system from within its own walls. The premise itself is seductive—a brilliant lawyer transformed into a prisoner, forced to weaponize his intellect from a prison cell—and there are moments where this premise truly sings. The courtroom sequences crackle with energy, particularly when Vijay begins assembling his defense from behind bars, a clever inversion of the typical legal thriller. The chemistry between Vijay and Swapna works best when it feels like two people strategizing survival rather than romance, and those quieter scenes of coordination between inside and outside carry real emotional weight. However, the film struggles with pacing in its middle act; the conspiracy unravels almost too conveniently, and the supporting characters—particularly the prison officials and antagonists—feel more like plot devices than fully realized obstacles. What's frustrating is that the film could have dug deeper into Vijay's psychological unraveling, the moral ambiguity of his methods, but instead opts for a more straightforward hero's journey.

Where "Phaansi Ke Baad" truly falters is in its unwillingness to complicate its own narrative. The finale, while technically satisfying, feels inevitable rather than earned—we know from the opening that Vijay will triumph, that truth will emerge, and the film never genuinely challenges that expectation. The direction is competent but rarely inspired; sce

Storyline

Vijay's got it all—a stellar courtroom record, respect, the works—until his girlfriend Swapna finds evidence suggesting the convicted murderer Abbas might actually be innocent. He decides to secretly dig into the case while defending Abbas in court, only to discover a massive conspiracy lurking beneath the surface. But just when things are getting interesting, boom—Vijay gets arrested for murder himself, and suddenly the brilliant advocate is behind bars facing the very system he's mastered.

Now Vijay's trapped in a hostile prison full of dangerous criminals and crooked officials, but he doesn't break—he uses his legal smarts and sheer determination to gather evidence from the inside. Meanwhile, Swapna becomes an absolute force of nature on the outside, hunting down witnesses, exposing hidden motives, and refusing to back down despite powerful enemies trying to silence her. It's a high-stakes race against time as both of them work to uncover who really pulled the strings in this twisted conspiracy.

The courtroom finale is absolutely electric—Vijay, now defending himself, walks in with irrefutable evidence that doesn't just clear Abbas but exposes a deep web involving influential players nobody saw coming. Truth wins, justice prevails, and Vijay walks out vindicated with his reputation restored and the real culprits finally facing consequences. It's a brilliant reminder that sometimes the system's toughest fighter has to battle from the inside to make it work.
