Payback attempts to explore the moral ambiguity between debt and duty, a premise with genuine dramatic potential that unfortunately gets lost in muddled execution. The core concept—an ordinary man indebted to a hired assassin—could have become a taut thriller or a thoughtful character study, but director Srijit Mukherji struggles to decide which one he's making. The performances, while earnest, feel restrained rather than nuanced; we sense the actors are working within tight constraints imposed by an uncertain script. What could have been a compelling examination of obligation versus ethics instead becomes a series of contrived confrontations that never quite land with the emotional or narrative weight they deserve.

The film's greatest misstep is its treatment of the central conflict. Rather than allowing tension to build organically from the protagonist's impossible choice, the narrative rushes through crucial character moments, leaving us with surface-level drama instead of genuine dilemma. The girlfriend subplot, meant to crystallize Kunal's moral crisis, feels tagged on rather than integral—a missed opportunity to deepen our investment in his predicament. Even the technical aspects feel competent but uninspired; cinematography and editing are serviceable but unmemorable.

What saves Payback from being entirely forgettable is its willingness to engage with uncomfortable questions about reciprocity and responsibility. There are fleeting moments where the film glimpses some

Storyline

So basically, there's this insurance guy named Kunal who gets into a terrible accident that nearly kills him, but this random guy Raghu shows up and saves his life. Pretty heroic, right? Well, a few months go by and they randomly run into each other again, so Kunal figures he owes Raghu and invites him over for some tea to be nice.

But here's where things get weird—Kunal discovers that his rescuer isn't just some good Samaritan. Raghu is actually a hired assassin, and there are some seriously dangerous people after him. So now Kunal's got this whole mess on his hands with a killer living under his roof, basically.

Then to make matters worse, Kunal's girlfriend gets caught up in all this chaos. Now he's stuck in this impossible situation where he's torn between protecting the person he loves and honoring the debt he feels like he owes to the guy who saved his life. It becomes this whole internal battle about what the right thing to do actually is.
