6.8/10Critic Score

Madhuri Dixit's presence anchors what could have been a superficial exposé into something genuinely moving—a portrait of three women whose dreams collide with the brutal machinery of Mumbai's entertainment world. Director Madhur Bhandarkar captures the glittering desperation of Page 3 society with unflinching honesty, and when the film stays focused on Madhavi's moral awakening, it resonates deeply. The early scenes crackle with observation: how Pearl's marriage becomes a gilded cage, how Gayatri's vulnerability makes her prey, how Madhavi slowly realizes that amplifying lies is still lying. There's real journalism ethics embedded here, and real heartbreak beneath the designer saris and cocktail parties.

Yet the film stumbles when it tries to be everything at once. The investigation subplot feels grafted on, pulling focus from the intimate character work that makes us care. Some performances falter under the weight of melodrama—particularly in the third act, where genuine emotional complexity gives way to convenient resolutions and moralizing. The supporting cast doesn't always match Dixit's commitment, and you sense Bhandarkar losing confidence in his own nuanced setup, reaching instead for dramatic complications that feel manufactured rather than earned.

What lingers, though, is the film's core insight: that complicity in a corrupt system doesn't require malice, just ambition and the desire to belong. Madhavi's journey—from thrilled newcomer to disillusioned truth-seeker—

Storyline

Madhavi arrives in Mumbai with big dreams and lands a gig writing celebrity gossip for Page 3 of a major newspaper. She shares an apartment with Pearl, an air hostess hunting for a rich husband, and Gayatri, a struggling actress trying to make it in films. As these three women navigate their lives in the city, they each find themselves caught up in messy situations involving relationships, career ambitions, and the darker side of the entertainment world.

Things get pretty complicated when Gayatri gets involved with a famous actor who doesn't want anyone knowing about their relationship, especially when she becomes pregnant. Meanwhile, Pearl chases her dream of marrying wealthy and eventually does, but discovers that money doesn't necessarily bring happiness. Madhavi tries to do her job as a journalist by reporting on these celebrity scandals, but keeps running into roadblocks when her editor refuses to publish her stories and pressures her to stay quiet.

Eventually, Madhavi gets fed up with the shallow world of celebrity journalism and decides she wants to cover real news instead. She starts working on crime stories with another journalist and gets caught up in investigating some serious incidents happening around the city. Her journey takes an unexpected turn when her personal life falls apart at the same time, making her rethink everything she thought she wanted from life in Mumbai.
