5/10Critic Score

"Operation Romeo" taps into a genuinely unsettling premise—two young lovers caught in an extortion racket by corrupt cops—but stumbles in the execution. The film works best when it leans into the claustrophobic tension of the couple trapped in a car with predatory officers demanding bribes, and there's real visceral discomfort in watching Adi and Neha's romantic evening spiral into a nightmare. However, the screenplay lacks the nuance to explore what could have been a sharp social commentary on police brutality and moral compromise. Instead, it often plays things safe, diluting the darker implications with convenient resolutions and avoiding the harder questions about complicity and systemic corruption that the story begs to ask.

The performances are competent but not exceptional—there's a rawness to the couple's panic that feels authentic enough, particularly in the more harrowing sequences. But the supporting cast, especially the antagonistic cops, never quite transcend caricature; they needed more complexity to be truly menacing rather than just oleaginous. Director Rishab Batheja shows some visual flair in trapping us within the confined space of the vehicle, but the pacing falters in the third act, and the film's resolution feels more like a convenient plot device than an earned dramatic payoff. What could have been a taut, provocative thriller about urban predation instead becomes a competently made but ultimately toothless cautionary tale.

Storyline

So okay, you have to watch this film about this sweet couple, Adi and Neha, who are secretly dating because their families are super traditional and would absolutely lose it if they found out. He's this IT guy and she's still in college, right? One night he plans this romantic drive for her birthday with this whole proposal thing lined up—it's actually really cute how much he's put into it.

But then things go downhill fast, yaar. These two guys claiming to be cops show up and catch them in a compromising moment, and suddenly they're threatening to call their parents and ruin everything. The situation gets really nasty because one of the "officers" starts making these horrible comments to Neha, and she's genuinely terrified. The couple's in total panic mode, so when these guys demand a massive bribe, Adi just says yes even though he doesn't have the cash on hand.

Now they're stuck in this nightmare situation where they have to drive around to ATMs to get money, and this creepy cop keeps sitting with Neha in the backseat. The whole vibe goes from romantic to absolutely suffocating, and you can feel how trapped and desperate they both are. It's actually a really tense and uncomfortable watch in the best way possible—you're just waiting to see how they're going to get out of this mess.
