One Night Stand

Rajesh Pillai's "One Night Stand" squanders a premise with genuine potential—the collision between marital stability and unresolved desire—by reducing it to a tedious, implausible melodrama. Sunny Leone's Celina is essentially a prop, a fantasy figure without agency or depth, while Naseeruddin Shah's Urvil makes catastrophically stupid decisions that the film expects us to sympathize with rather than judge. The Bangkok flashback sequences feel like soft-core filler, and the attempts at portraying "passion" come across as creepy obsession dressed up in romantic lighting. Shah does what he can with undercooked material, but even a fine actor can't salvage a script that mistakes infidelity-as-plot-device for meaningful character exploration.

What's truly galling is how the film handles its central moral question—whether a man should betray his wife's trust for the sake of nostalgia—by essentially dodging it. Instead of exploring the psychological complexity of temptation, we get a globe-trotting treasure hunt that's neither thrilling nor coherent. The product launch subplot feels grafted on from a different, equally forgettable film. There's no wit, no insight, and certainly no honesty about what this story is really about: a man's entitlement to chase ghosts while his wife waits at home. The 75% ROI collapse at the box office wasn't unjust—audiences rightly sensed hollow filmmaking masquerading as sophistication.
