5/10Critic Score

"Naya Raasta" arrives with all the right intentions but stumbles badly in execution, turning what could have been a sharp social commentary into a melodramatic slog. Director Vikram Sethi has crafted a film that wears its progressive messaging like a badge while simultaneously undercutting it with corny dialogue, ham-fisted emotional beats, and a romance that feels more obligatory than earned. The second half's courtroom sequences show promise—there's genuine legal reasoning buried in there—but by then we're so exhausted by the village politics and the tiresome back-and-forth of Chander and Shallo's separation that the finale lands with a thud rather than the cathartic punch it aims for. Rajesh Khanna as Chander brings gravitas to the role, but even his seasoned presence can't salvage the script's wooden moralism.

What truly irritates me is the film's refusal to commit to its own complexity. Caste prejudice, domestic abuse, and legal reform are heavy topics that deserve better than this surface-level treatment. The character of Radha—the sister who reforms her debauched husband—feels like a convenient plot device rather than a woman with agency, and Shallo's passivity throughout most of the narrative undermines every "strong woman" moment the film tries to inject in the finale. Tulsi Devi's villainy is one-note, the Thakur's murder feels rushed and unearned, and the climactic courtroom victory, while technically sound, arrives too late to salvage the emotional investment. Storyline

Chander's this hotshot criminal lawyer who moves back to his village after his dad dies, ready to shake things up with progressive ideas and help the struggling folks around him. He's completely smitten with Shallo, a girl from the lower castes, but the village panchayat absolutely loses it—no way they're letting that happen! His mom Rukmini Devi puts on the pressure and convinces Shallo to marry someone else instead, leaving Chander shattered and running on empty.

Plot twist: Shallo gets married off to Ramu but her new in-laws, especially his mom Tulsi Devi, treat her like garbage because of her background. Enter Chander's sister Radha, who marries the debauched Thakur Suraj Pratap Singh and actually manages to reform him into a decent human—and she decides to help Shallo too! When Ramu finally realizes how badly his family's been treating his wife, he leaves them, but the sketchy Thakur has his own twisted plans and murders Ramu in a brutal fight; Shallo fights back and knocks out the creep.

Now Shallo's in serious legal trouble, accused of killing the Thakur, but guess who steps up as her defense lawyer? Chander absolutely crushes it in court, proving her innocence beyond doubt and getting her acquitted! The film wraps up with these two finally getting their moment—Chander and Shallo tie the knot, proving that love and justice can actually triumph over rigid caste systems and village prejudice!
