Review
Guru Dutt's "Mr. & Mrs. '55" emerges as a surprisingly sophisticated romantic comedy that grapples with genuine emotional stakes beneath its playful surface. The film's central premise—a contractual marriage between a penniless cartoonist and a wealthy heiress—could have easily devolved into farce, but Dutt steers it toward something more meaningful. The courtship between Preetam and Anita crackles with real chemistry; there's an infectious lightness to their early scenes together that makes their inevitable complications land with actual weight. Dutt's direction shows admirable restraint in the romantic moments, allowing silences and glances to do heavy lifting that dialogue often squanders in films of this era.
What makes the film particularly noteworthy is its willingness to complicate the love story. The kidnapping sequence—ostensibly comedic—carries an unsettling edge that the film doesn't entirely shy away from, and Preetam's sabotage of his own marriage through fabricated court evidence is a genuinely bold narrative choice. It speaks to insecurity and self-destruction rather than any romantic ideal, and the film doesn't let him off easily for it. The supporting cast, particularly whoever portrays Seeta Devi's controlling aunt, grounds the fantasy with authentic menace. Where the film occasionally falters is in pacing; certain sequences extend beyond their narrative necessity, and the tonal shifts between comedy and melodrama don't always align seamlessly.

Storyline
Preetam's a broke cartoonist just trying to get by when he locks eyes with Anita, this stunning tennis enthusiast from money and privilege! She's wrapped up tight by her controlling aunt Seeta Devi, who's basically brainwashed her against romance and real connection. But here's the kicker—Anita's father's will says she needs to marry within a month of turning 21 to get her fortune, so Seeta hatches this devious scheme to hire Preetam for a fake marriage that'll end in quick divorce, giving Anita both freedom and cash without actual love ruining the plan!
Problem is, Preetam and Anita already know each other, and the spark between them is absolutely undeniable! He kidnaps her after the wedding (yes, really!) and whisks her away to his traditional family home, where she starts seeing life differently through his sister-in-law's eyes. But Preetam gets paranoid that he's losing her, so in this gut-wrenching moment, he actually speeds up the divorce by faking evidence in court—destroying what could've been real just to protect his own heart!
Heartbroken, Preetam heads to the airport ready to leave Mumbai behind for good, but Anita finally figures out what her heart's been screaming all along! She races after him in this gorgeous climactic moment, and they finally get the reunion we've been dying for—love winning out over schemes and doubt!
