Mohabbat treads familiar terrain in the romance-drama space, delivering a story that hinges on the eternal conflict between familial duty and romantic passion—a staple of Hindi cinema that films from Pyaasa to Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin have explored with far greater nuance. The narrative setup is competent enough: a dowry demand fractures an engagement, pride wounds a father, and the male lead must choose between blood and beloved. Yet the execution feels formulaic; the stepmother's villainy lacks the psychological depth that would elevate her beyond a stock antagonist, and the resolution, while emotionally satisfying on the surface, arrives without the earned complexity that separates memorable cinema from serviceable entertainment. The central love story relies heavily on the chemistry between leads, which carries the film through its quieter moments, but even their earnestness cannot fully overcome the script's tendency toward melodrama over genuine emotional excavation.

Storyline

Shekhar's absolutely head over heels for Roopa, and her doting father Choudhury is totally on board with their marriage—everything's set to be a perfect match! But then Shekhar's greedy stepmother swoops in demanding an outrageous dowry that poor Choudhury simply can't afford, and just like that, the whole engagement explodes! Devastated and disgusted by his family's greed, Shekhar tries desperately to win Choudhury back, but the old man's pride is shattered and he's already moving on.

Now Choudhury's determined to marry Roopa off to some guy named Atmaram instead, and both Shekhar and Roopa are left absolutely crushed, not knowing which way is up! The tension's unbearable—Shekhar's torn between his family loyalty and his love, while Roopa's trapped in her father's plans with zero say in her own future! Everything feels hopeless as the wedding preparations with Atmaram barrel forward.

But love finds a way in these stories, doesn't it? Shekhar makes the ultimate choice to abandon his toxic family and fight for what matters, proving to Choudhury that his love for Roopa is genuine and pure! The walls come down, the truth prevails, and what seemed impossible just moments before suddenly becomes beautifully, undeniably real for our star-crossed lovers!
