Review
Abhishek Dudhaiya's "Meri Pyaari Bindu" is a nostalgic love letter to long-distance relationships and the bittersweet ache of unrequited affection, though it struggles to transcend the melodramatic conventions that often bog down Hindi cinema's romantic dramas. Ayushmann Khurrana brings a vulnerability to Abhi that feels lived-in—his awkward stammering and self-deprecating humor soften what could have been a mawkish male lead—while Parineeti Chopra captures Bindu's restless spirit with genuine warmth. However, the film's reliance on postcards and voice-overs as narrative devices feels dated even for its 2017 release; compared to contemporaries like "Jab Harry Met Sally" (which understands ensemble chemistry) or even Imtiaz Ali's more textured takes on love across distances, this one relies too heavily on telling rather than showing. The Mumbai-Bangalore-Goa backdrop provides visual reprieve, but the emotional payoff hinges on a climactic sequence that strains credibility rather than catharsis.
Where Dudhaiya's direction truly falters is in the middle stretch, where the film languishes in repetitive misunderstandings and Abhi's banking job subplot feels like narrative filler. The chemistry between Khurrana and Chopra is undeniable in their lighter moments—there's an infectious playfulness in their early Kolkata scenes—but the script doesn't give them enough substantial dialogue to explore why this bond matters beyond nostalgia. Storyline
So there's this successful author named Abhi who's completely stuck creatively and can't finish his book. He decides to head back to his hometown in Kolkata to clear his head and catch a birthday party. While he's there, all these memories come flooding back about Bindu, this girl who lived near him growing up and wanted to be a singer. They became super close friends, and honestly, Abhi had deeper feelings for her, but he never told her because he didn't want to ruin what they had. His mom wasn't thrilled about the whole situation either, which made it even more complicated.
Life took them in different directions when tragedy hit Bindu's family. Her mom died in a terrible accident, and Bindu got really upset with her dad over it. She ended up leaving college and moving all the way to Melbourne to get away from everything. Meanwhile, Abhi finished his education and went to Bangalore for his MBA. They tried staying connected through letters and postcards for a while, and during that time Bindu mentioned she was engaged, though that relationship didn't last. Eventually, they just stopped keeping in touch with each other.
Years pass by, and then Abhi randomly runs into Bindu again when he's visiting Goa. She tells him she's gotten engaged again, and this time she seems genuinely happy about it. Abhi gets pretty devastated hearing this and heads back to Mumbai where he's working at a bank. They do continue talking though, and one day Bindu asks him to meet up at a restaurant where she has something important to tell him about this engagement.
