6.9/10Critic Score

"Meri Biwi Ki Shaadi" operates on a premise so audaciously absurd that it could collapse entirely under its own weight—and yet, in the hands of a director who understands the delicate balance between farce and sentiment, it mostly holds together. The central conceit of a hypochondriac husband recruiting his wife's ex-lover as a potential widower is played with enough earnestness that it transcends the ridiculous and becomes genuinely touching. The film succeeds because it never winks at the audience; it commits fully to the emotional logic of a man so terrified of abandonment that he'd rather orchestrate elaborate deception than face uncertainty. The supporting cast carries these moments with admirable restraint, refusing to turn the premise into slapstick when subtlety would serve better.

Where the film falters is in its execution during the middle stretch, where the misunderstanding between husband and wife threatens to tip into melodrama rather than comedy. The pacing occasionally betrays the lightness the story needs—some scenes linger when they should snap, and the conflict resolution feels slightly rushed despite the film's overall runtime. The lead performances, however, remain the film's saving grace. There's real vulnerability in portraying a man wrestling with mortality through hypochondria, and the actress playing Priya demonstrates impressive range in conveying hurt, suspicion, and eventual understanding without becoming a mere reactionary character.

Storyline

Bhagwant's a nervous wreck—literally checking his pulse every five seconds—so when chest pains hit, he's convinced it's curtains. He's sitting in the hospital, overhearing doctors talk about some poor soul's terminal diagnosis, and boom, he's absolutely certain they're talking about him. So naturally, this absolute legend decides his wife Priya needs a backup husband lined up, and he tracks down her college sweetheart Fernandes to be the guy. It's ridiculous, it's desperate, it's weirdly sweet in the saddest way possible.

But Priya's no fool—she spots her husband sneaking around with Fernandes and instantly thinks he's got a whole other woman waiting in the wings! She's furious, she's heartbroken, and she kicks him straight out of the house before he can even explain. Now Bhagwant's scrambling to fix the mess he created, while his wife's convinced he's been cheating, and everything's spiraling beautifully into chaos.

It all comes crashing down when the truth finally spills out—turns out Bhagwant's healthier than a horse, he was just his typical paranoid self, and the whole "finding a new husband" thing was genuinely about protecting Priya's future. Cue the tearful reunion, the forgiveness, and that perfect moment where they both realize how ridiculous and kind of touching this whole disaster was. Love wins, hypochondria loses, and honestly, you can't stop smiling by the end!
