7/10Critic Score

Zoya Akhtar's directorial debut is a refreshingly cynical examination of Bollywood's underbelly, though it struggles to fully synthesize its ambitious scope. The film cleverly juxtaposes Vikram's fortuitous rise against Sona's grinding desperation, creating a harsh commentary on how luck and circumstance—rather than talent—dictate careers in this industry. Farhan Akhtar delivers a naturalistic performance that avoids the typical leading man vanity, while Konkona Sen Sharma brings raw vulnerability to Sona's arc, making her exploitation feel genuinely uncomfortable rather than melodramatic. However, the narrative meanders when it should sharpen; the romantic entanglement with Nikki (Isha Koppikar) feels narratively inevitable yet emotionally undercooked, and the film loses momentum in its second half as it pivots between romantic drama and industry satire without fully committing to either.

What ultimately saves the film is Akhtar's observational eye for detail and her refusal to moralize. Unlike the earnest, system-blaming narratives of similar industry dramas—think *Page 3* or the more recent *Drishyam* ripoffs—*Luck by Chance* understands that Bollywood corruption isn't villainy, it's simply how the machine operates. The supporting cast, particularly Naseeruddin Shah as a world-weary director, feels lived-in and real. Yet the film's self-aware style occasionally slides into self-indulgence, and some subplots feel abandoned. Compared to later Akhtar films like *Dil Dhadakne

Storyline

So there's this guy named Vikram who moves to Mumbai with big dreams of becoming a Bollywood actor. He meets Sona, another aspiring performer, and they start dating. Sona's been through a rough time trying to make it in the industry—she's had to do some pretty questionable things with a producer named Satish just to get small roles, and he keeps dangling promises of bigger opportunities that never materialize. It's a tough situation, and you can see how desperate she is to catch her big break.

Things start looking up for Vikram when he randomly gets called for an audition that ends up being for the lead role in a major film. He's over the moon about it and celebrates with Sona before heading off to shoot on location. Once he gets there, he meets Nikki, the female lead, and her mom Neena, who used to be a big actress back in the day. The three of them get along great, and the shoot seems like it's going smoothly with everyone vibing together.

But then drama starts brewing on set when Nikki decides to make a move on Vikram one night when her mom's away. Things happen between them, and pretty soon everyone on the crew is talking about the two leads being involved. When Sona hears the gossip and shows up at the shoot, Vikram doesn't even offer to let her stay with him, which basically confirms all the rumors. Once everyone gets back to Mumbai, word starts spreading about Vikram's romantic entanglements, and that's when things really get messy.
