4/10Critic Score

"Love in Simla" is precisely the kind of melodramatic drivel that clutters Hindi cinema—a premise so flimsy it collapses under its own weight. The film hinges on the tired "plain girl proves her worth" trope, except it executes this narrative with all the nuance of a sledgehammer. Sonia's character oscillates between victim and schemer without ever becoming sympathetic or interesting, and the central challenge—stealing her cousin's boyfriend—is presented as empowering when it's actually just petty and morally bankrupt. The director fails to extract any meaningful conflict from this setup, instead padding the runtime with forgettable musical interludes and saccharine family drama that feels utterly disconnected from reality.

The performances are uniformly flat, which speaks volumes about either the acting caliber or the direction—likely both. There's no chemistry between the leads, no spark of genuine emotion that might have salvaged this wreck. The supporting cast delivers their lines like they're reading cue cards, and the aunt's relentless cruelty becomes cartoonish rather than dramatically compelling. What could have been a character study about self-worth and inner beauty transforms into a shallow revenge fantasy, complete with predictable twists that insult the viewer's intelligence.

Technically, the film is competent in the most baseline sense—the cinematography captures Simla's landscape adequately, and the music is merely background noise rather than active irritant

Storyline

After the untimely death of her father and mother, Sonia is orphaned and lives with her aunt and paternal uncle (General and Mrs. Rajpal Singh). Sonia is plain-looking, like her real mother, and often invites unappreciative taunts and critical remarks from her aunt and cousin, Sheela. Sheela has a boyfriend, Dev Kumar Mehra, and she plans to marry him. Fed-up with hearing frequent taunts and adverse remarks about her plain-looks, Sonia challenges Sheela that she will make Dev fall in love with her.
