J.P. Dutta's ambitious attempt to chronicle the Kargil conflict carries noble intentions but struggles under the weight of its sprawling narrative and technical execution. The film's greatest strength lies in its earnest effort to honor the sacrifice of our armed forces—there's genuine respect here for the soldiers and officers portrayed. However, the direction falters in translating the complexity of the 1999 conflict into compelling cinema. The screenplay dilutes tension by spreading focus across too many character threads without allowing any single narrative thread to breathe, and the pacing meanders when it should grip. The performances are serviceable rather than exceptional; the actors, many of them newcomers or underutilized talents, do what they can with underdeveloped roles that feel more like historical placeholders than fully realized characters. The technical aspects—cinematography, editing, sound design—are functional but unremarkable, lacking the visceral impact needed to make the mountain warfare sequences truly harrowing.

What frustrates most is the missed opportunity. A war film of this scale demanded either tighter storytelling or deeper character development, and Dutta provides neither consistently enough. The film's heart is unmistakably in the right place, particularly in its refusal to sensationalize combat, yet this restraint sometimes crosses into dullness. Storyline

So basically, the movie kicks off with this tense situation where Indian soldiers are trying to figure out what's happening along the border. Some patrols go missing and things get pretty chaotic, so the army decides to send more troops to investigate. Two officers get sent to check things out, and things quickly go south when they discover that Pakistani forces have secretly moved in and taken control of key positions in the mountains. The Indian Army gets caught off guard and takes some heavy hits trying to push them back.

After getting pushed back a few times, the Indian military brass decides it's time to bring in the big guns and send their best units to handle the situation. However, there's this weird restriction from the higher-ups in Delhi that prevents the army from crossing the border, which leaves a lot of soldiers confused about why they're being mobilized in the first place. Despite these limitations, they start deploying specialized mountain warfare units to deal with the Pakistani forces holding the peaks around Kargil.

The story follows several brave military units and their commanding officers as they get ready for the action ahead. You've got the 1st battalion of the Gorkha Rifles, who are absolute legends when it comes to fighting in high-altitude terrain, and then the 18th Grenadiers, who were originally stationed in Kashmir dealing with other security issues. Both units bring together some seriously courageous soldiers and officers who are about to face a real test of their skills and bravery in the mountain region.
