Review

5/10Critic Score

Rajkumar Santoshi's *Kurbaan* attempts to weave a sprawling revenge saga across generational lines, reminiscent of the grand masala epics of the 1980s, but the execution falters under the weight of its own ambitions. The film's central conceit—two estranged friends unknowingly positioned on opposite sides of a blood feud, with their children's romance as the ignition point—carries echoes of *Sholay* and *Khून Ka Khoon*, yet lacks the narrative discipline those classics possessed. Ajay Devgn brings a brooding intensity to Daku Prithvi Singh, channeling the righteous rage of a wronged man convincingly, while Suniel Shetty's Suraj Singh is serviceable if somewhat one-dimensional. The problem lies not in the performances but in a script that struggles to balance its multiple threads—the romance between Akash and Chanda feels rushed and underdeveloped, serving more as plot mechanics than genuine emotional investment.

What undermines *Kurbaan* most acutely is its inability to sustain thematic coherence across its runtime. The film oscillates between intimate family drama and large-scale action sequences without earning the emotional transitions, and the reintroduction of Panna Singh as a looming threat in the climax feels opportunistic rather than organic. Santoshi's direction, typically assured, seems unmoored here, as if grappling with material that needed either sharper trimming or deeper character work. There are moments of genuine tension—particularly in the ambush sequences—

Storyline

Maan Singh loses a property case to the honest Prithvi Singh and absolutely loses it—he hires the feared bandit Panna Singh to wipe out Prithvi's entire family! The attack is brutal and devastating, destroying everything Prithvi holds dear, but here's the kicker: Suraj Singh, the Police Inspector and Prithvi's own best friend, testifies against him out of duty when Prithvi seeks revenge. This betrayal cuts deep, shattering their bond forever and pushing Prithvi over the edge into darkness.

Prithvi escapes prison, takes over Panna Singh's gang, and becomes the legendary outlaw Daku Prithvi Singh—a man consumed by rage and vengeance! He goes into hiding with his remaining family: his daughter Chanda, their old housekeeper Kakimaa, and her son Himmat. Meanwhile, years roll by and Suraj Singh raises his son Akash in the city, completely unaware that his best friend from another life is now a feared dacoit plotting in the shadows.

Then love throws a wrench into everything—Akash and Chanda meet at a fair and fall hard for each other, but when their fathers discover the connection, all hell breaks loose! The young lovers attempt a daring escape, utterly clueless that Panna Singh is still out there, hungry for blood and determined to finish what he started by destroying Prithvi and his family once and for all. It's the perfect storm of romance, revenge, and reckoning barreling toward an explosive collision!
