6.8/10Critic Score

There's something genuinely tender about "Kuchh Bheege Alfaaz," a film that understands the quiet power of voices and vulnerability in a city like Kolkata. Director Rishab Kopikar crafts a love story that doesn't shout—it whispers, through radio waves and phone calls, through the spaces between words where real connection actually happens. Archana is a character who refuses to be pitied despite her vitiligo, and that defiance is both her shield and her prison. Varun Dhawan captures Alfaaz's guarded melancholy with restraint, and watching these two souls find each other through accident and then accident alone is where the film's heart truly beats. The chemistry between them feels earned, not manufactured, and that matters.

What makes this film resonate is how honestly it portrays the gap between who we appear to be and who we actually are. Archana's relentless positivity masks a deeper longing, while Alfaaz's distance conceals wounds that haven't healed. The radio show itself becomes a character—a sanctuary for broken hearts—and the film doesn't judge its people for needing that shelter. However, the second half struggles to sustain the intimacy of their early conversations, and the resolution feels slightly rushed, as if the film loses faith in its own gentle philosophy just when it should lean into it hardest. It's a small film with big emotions, imperfectly executed but never less than sincere.

Storyline

So there's this super popular radio show in Kolkata that airs every night at 10, and it's basically all about these heartbreaking love stories that people can't seem to get over. The guy running the whole thing is Alfaaz, this mysterious RJ who everyone's obsessed with, but he likes to keep his distance and stay completely anonymous. One of his biggest fans is this loud, energetic girl named Archana who works at a creative agency making branded memes, and she's living her best life despite having a skin condition that makes her look different from most people.

One day, Archana accidentally calls the wrong number while trying to reach a blind date she's set up, and somehow ends up getting through to Alfaaz himself. It's this funny, totally unplanned moment that kicks off something pretty unexpected between them. From that accidental conversation, they start this whole connection where they begin talking to each other regularly.

The interesting thing about these two is how different they are and how they deal with their problems in completely opposite ways. Archana is always overcompensating and acting upbeat, but she's clearly running from something in her present life. Alfaaz, on the other hand, seems calm and distant on the surface, but you get the sense he's carrying around some serious baggage from his past that's weighing him down. Together, they form this unlikely pair that you wouldn't expect to click, but somehow they do.
