Kohra arrives as a gothic thriller with genuine atmospheric promise, and director Chopra deserves credit for constructing a genuinely unsettling mansion that becomes a character unto itself. The early sequences effectively mine dread from isolation and whispered servant gossip, tapping into that primal unease of a new bride in an old, secretive house. The performances are serviceable—the lead carries her arc from romantic naivety to determined investigator with reasonable conviction, while the supporting cast, particularly the housekeeper, leans into their shadowy roles without overplaying the melodrama. Where Kohra stumbles, however, is in its narrative architecture. The revelation of Poonam's fate unfolds predictably, and the "dark secrets" feel more like obligatory plot beats than organic revelations. The supernatural elements, initially intriguing, eventually muddy the waters rather than clarify them—we're never quite certain whether we're watching a ghost story or a crime thriller, and the film doesn't seem to know either.
What ultimately hampers Kohra is its inability to sustain tension through the second half. As layers peel away, they expose remarkably familiar material: the duplicitous husband, the complicit household, the wronged first wife. The climactic confrontation lacks the punch such a buildup demands, resolving itself with less ingenuity than the mystery deserved. Storyline
Rajeshwari falls head over heels for the wealthy Amit Kumar Singh and they tie the knot in a whirlwind romance! He sweeps her away to his sprawling mansion perched dramatically in the middle of the moors—all gothic vibes and imposing architecture. But the servants start whispering about Poonam, Amit's first wife who died under mysteriously murky circumstances just a year ago, and the creepy housekeeper Dai Maa refuses to warm up to her new mistress.
When Amit jets off for a business trip, Rajeshwari's left alone in this massive, eerie house and things get genuinely unsettling—supernatural occurrences start happening, and she's haunted by Poonam's restless spirit! Rajeshwari's terrified but also determined, so she decides to dig into what really happened to Poonam and why everyone's so tight-lipped about it. What she discovers is absolutely jaw-dropping—layer after layer of dark secrets tangled up between Amit, Poonam, and literally everyone in that mansion!
As the truth unravels, Rajeshwari realizes nothing is what it seemed and the people she trusted are hiding some seriously sinister stuff. She's forced to confront the dangerous reality of her marriage and the twisted web of lies that's been holding everyone hostage in that haunted house. In the end, she finds the strength to expose everything and reclaim her own destiny, leaving the mansion's dark past behind for good!
