5/10Critic Score

Ashutosh Gowariker's "Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey" attempts to resurrect a forgotten chapter of the freedom struggle through the lens of Surya Sen's revolutionary network, and while the film's heart beats earnestly for its subject matter, the execution stumbles badly under the weight of its own ambitions. Abhishek Bachchan carries the film with surprising restraint, avoiding his usual theatrics, but he's let down by a screenplay that confuses historical reverence with actual drama. The supporting cast—particularly the female revolutionaries—deserves better material; their characters feel more like symbols than flesh-and-blood rebels, and the film's treatment of Pritilata and Kalpana reduces their extraordinary courage to romantic subplots and teary-eyed patriotism. Gowariker, usually a craftsman of considerable skill, seems oddly passive here, letting scenes drift without tension or purpose.

What grinds the film to a halt is its refusal to make any real moral or political argument about the struggle it's depicting. We get montages of training, snippets of police surveillance, and climactic action sequences, but precious little about *why* these young people were driven to pick up arms, or what the actual cost of their choices meant beyond sacrificial melodrama. The second half devolves into a series of increasingly contrived set pieces that feel more like a video game than cinema, and by the time Pritilata's raid arrives, you're too exhausted to care. For a film about revolutio

Storyline

So basically, there's this schoolteacher named Surya Sen who's secretly leading a group of young revolutionaries fighting for Indian independence. He's got this whole network of passionate rebels around him, including two incredibly brave women named Pritilata and Kalpana who are just as committed to the cause as the guys. They start out doing risky spy missions together, like disguising themselves to sketch out military positions, and it's clear these kids are willing to do whatever it takes for freedom.

Things get pretty intense when the police start closing in on Surya and his crew. One of his trusted lieutenants, Nirmal, makes this heartbreaking sacrifice so that Surya can escape and keep the movement alive. It's one of those moments where you really see how dedicated these young people are to their mission, willing to give everything for what they believe in.

The story builds up to this dramatic raid where Pritilata leads a group of rebels on a dangerous attack against the occupying forces. It's a pivotal moment that shows just how far the independence fighters are willing to go, and the personal cost that comes with their struggle. The whole film captures this incredible era of sacrifice and bravery, following these ordinary young people who became extraordinary revolutionaries.
