6/10Critic Score

There's a profound heartache at the center of this film that lingers long after the credits roll—a meditation on consent, duty, and what it truly means to give a daughter away. The narrative weaves between two love stories with genuine emotional stakes: Amar's straightforward devotion to Lata feels almost quaint against Kumar's turbulent awakening, where passion collides with the weight of tradition. What works beautifully is how the film refuses easy answers; Rekha isn't simply a victim waiting for rescue, but a young woman grappling with her own agency in a system designed to strip it from her. The performances capture this complexity—there's a quiet dignity in how Rekha navigates betrayal and heartbreak, and Kumar's journey from selfishness to understanding feels earned rather than convenient. Director brings a certain lyrical quality to village life and the ceremonial world of hockey teams, making even the minor characters feel lived-in.

However, the plot's relentless melodrama occasionally undermines its own wisdom. The near-suicide, the revelations that keep piling on, the last-minute interventions—these feel like emotional manipulation rather than organic storytelling. There are moments when the film preaches rather than shows, particularly in how the mother's final speech about "meaningful kanyadan" resolves everything too neatly. The second half loses some of the nuance that makes the first half resonate; it becomes more concerned with plot mechanics than the psycho

Storyline

Amar from the boys' hockey team falls hard for Lata from the victorious Bulbuls, and his poet friend—also named Amar Kumar—decides to play cupid and marry them off himself! But Kumar's life takes a wild turn when his car breaks down in a village and he meets Rekha, a tradition-loving girl who absolutely captivates him. Their chemistry is electric, and he's ready to propose—until her mother drops a bombshell: Rekha was married off to someone named Amar in childhood, and she has no idea who he is!

Kumar's world shatters when he realizes the truth and quietly disappears, leaving Rekha heartbroken but determined to honor her childhood vows. When Kumar returns with proof that *he's* actually Amar Kumar and the other guy is already happily married to Lata, Rekha should be thrilled—but instead he cruelly tells her she can't ruin his friend's marriage and asks her to marry him instead! Devastated and furious, Rekha nearly throws herself under a car, and the couple reluctantly takes her in, thinking she's been abandoned by a cruel husband.

Everything spirals into chaos as Lata discovers her husband's hidden childhood marriage and jealousy poisons their home, pushing Rekha toward despair once again. But Rekha's mother arrives like a saving grace and delivers the ultimate truth: a marriage without consent, without a real kanyadan, isn't a marriage at all—it's just a meaningless childhood ritual! Armed with this wisdom and her mother's blessing, Rekha finally accepts Kumar with her head held high, proving that true love wins when it's paired with dignity and choice!
