5.9/10Critic Score

Mohit Suri's *Kalyug* operates as a revenge thriller wrapped in the veneer of social commentary, but ultimately struggles to justify its brutal premise with meaningful insight. The film centers on a non-consensual intimate recording—a genuinely distressing inciting incident—yet the narrative fumbles the gravity of this violation by pivoting toward a conventional revenge arc. Emraan Hashmi delivers a serviceable performance as the wronged protagonist, though the character remains frustratingly one-dimensional; we're meant to root for his vigilantism without grappling with the moral ambiguities the story introduces. Suri's direction is competent in technical terms—the Swiss setting provides visual variety absent in most Hindi thrillers—but the pacing sags in the second act, and the villain (Simi Roy) exists more as a plot device than a fully realized antagonist. The supporting cast, particularly Ali's character, hints at thematic richness that the screenplay never explores, instead opting for straightforward action beats and cathartic violence.

What's most troubling is the film's philosophical confusion. *Kalyug* wants to condemn the weaponization of privacy and the brutalization of women online, yet frames the solution as masculine revenge rather than systemic accountability or genuine justice. The film made ₹10.26 crores with a 157% ROI—respectable numbers for a mid-budget thriller—but box office success shouldn't obscure narrative shortcomings. Compared to Suri's mixed body

Storyline

So this guy Kunal had a pretty rough childhood—his dad had to flee Kashmir when he was just a kid and they ended up starting over in Mumbai. Years later, his father passes away, and through some family connections, Kunal gets tasked with looking after this woman named Renuka who his dad had promised to help out. Well, wouldn't you know it, the two of them fall head over heels for each other and decide to get married pretty quickly.

Right after their wedding, things take a dark turn during their honeymoon when they meet this sketchy guy named Johnny at their hotel. Without getting into all the messy details, let's just say someone records their private moments and posts it online without consent. Kunal figures out Johnny's behind it, but by then the situation spirals completely out of control, and Renuka ends up suffering tremendously from the whole ordeal. It's honestly pretty tragic and sets off a chain of events that changes everything for Kunal.

Once Kunal finally clears his name and gets out, he's on a mission to find the people responsible for destroying his life. It turns out Johnny was just working for some businesswoman named Simi Roy who actually runs the whole operation from Switzerland. So Kunal makes his way to Zürich to track them down and get his revenge, and along the way he meets this interesting character named Ali who's involved in some pretty unconventional business himself.
