5/10Critic Score

Sridevi returns as Vidya Bagchi in a sequel that mistakes convoluted plotting for cleverness, and it shows. Director Sujoy Ghosh seems content to recycle the mystery-thriller template that worked brilliantly in the first film, but here he drowns the narrative in unnecessary twists, a fragmented timeline, and a backstory involving Kalimpong that feels more like padding than genuine character exploration. The mother-daughter dynamic between Vidya and her disabled daughter Minnie could have been the emotional core—instead, it's underutilized and relegated to plot mechanics. Sridevi, to her credit, tries to inject conviction into a role that oscillates between victim and vengeful alter-ego, but even her considerable talent can't salvage a script that's more interested in shocking reveals than coherent storytelling. The film's obsession with the "Durga Rani Singh" persona becomes repetitive rather than intriguing.

What particularly galls is how the film squanders its West Bengal setting and the potential for a genuinely grounded thriller about desperation and motherhood. Instead, we get manufactured tension, contrived connections, and a mystery that unravels not from logical deduction but from convenient diary entries and convenient coincidences. Inderjeet Singh, the investigating officer, exists mostly as a prop to move exposition forward. The second half devolves into melodrama with thriller trappings, losing the taut grip of its predecessor entirely. Kahaani 2 proves that a go

Storyline

So there's this hardworking single mom named Vidya living in West Bengal with her teenage daughter Minnie, who uses a wheelchair. Vidya's been grinding away, saving up money with dreams of taking Minnie to America for treatment that might help her walk again. One night, everything goes terribly wrong when Minnie mysteriously disappears, and Vidya gets a threatening call demanding she meet someone or her daughter won't survive.

When Vidya rushes to help, she gets hit by a taxi and ends up in a coma at a nursing home. A police officer named Inderjeet gets assigned to investigate the case and discovers Vidya's diary, which becomes crucial evidence. As he reads through the pages, he discovers that Vidya might actually be connected to a wanted criminal—someone named Durga Rani Singh who's involved in kidnapping and murder cases.

The diary reveals Vidya's backstory: she used to work as a school clerk under the name Durga Rani Singh in a place called Kalimpong, where she was close to a coworker who had romantic feelings for her. While teaching, she noticed one of her students, also named Minnie, was struggling and being mistreated by other students. Despite her genuine efforts to help this troubled girl, things took unexpected turns that connected Vidya to the criminal case she's now caught up in.
