5.2/10Critic Score

Anurag Kashyap's "Kaashi in Search of Ganga" arrives with a genuinely compelling premise—a missing persons mystery wrapped around class conflict and criminal networks—but stumbles considerably in execution. The core investigation framework is taut enough, and the reveal that Ganga's disappearance is tied to an affair with a don's son carries real dramatic weight. However, the film's pacing becomes erratic once it pivots toward the courtroom drama in its second half. The performances, particularly from the lead, feel serviceable rather than lived-in; there's a brittleness to Kaashi's emotional arc that should resonate as tragedy but instead reads as performative. Devina functions as little more than a plot device dressed as a character, and the supporting cast never transcends their archetypal roles. What's most frustrating is that the film's thematic material—about how power corrupts institutions and the powerless are left with violence as their only language—deserves a more rigorous examination than Kashyap provides.

The technical craft is adequate but uninspired. Cinematography captures the atmosphere of small-town criminality and college paranoia without ever finding a visual language that might elevate the narrative beyond procedural predictability. The screenplay's biggest failure emerges in its final act: the ambiguous ending regarding Ganga's fate and Kaashi's culpability should provoke ethical questions, but instead it feels like narrative exhaustion. Storyline

So there's this guy Kaashi whose sister Ganga goes missing one night after college, and he's absolutely freaked out. He teams up with this woman named Devina to help him search, files a police report, and starts investigating on his own. When he checks the college, they can't even find any record of Ganga being a student there, which is super weird. Things get pretty intense when some sketchy guys approach him claiming to know where she is—he ends up beating them up trying to get answers.

Meanwhile, Devina manages to track down one of Ganga's college friends who's clearly terrified about something. She finally opens up and reveals that Ganga was secretly dating Abhimanyu, the son of this powerful local criminal guy named Balwant. The worst part? The friend hasn't heard from Ganga since she found out she was pregnant. This absolutely enrages Kaashi, and he goes straight to Balwant demanding answers about his sister's whereabouts.

Armed with information that Abhimanyu is hiding out in Mussoorie, Kaashi and Devina head there to track him down. When they finally find him in a hotel with another woman, everything goes downhill really fast. Abhimanyu denies even knowing who Ganga is, which pushes Kaashi to do something he can't take back, and he ends up getting arrested. Then a girl's body shows up that seems to match Ganga's description based on her clothes, and the whole thing turns into a legal nightmare with the case going to court.
