3/10Critic Score

Govind P. Mohan's "Jhootha Kahin Ka" is a film that mistakes melodrama for emotional depth and lazy plotting for narrative complexity. The core premise—a generational clash between a Punjabi farmer-father and his Mauritius-obsessed son—has potential, but the execution is painfully formulaic. The performances are forgettable across the board; there's no spark between Varun and Riya that justifies their sudden marriage, and the supporting cast feels like they're reading lines rather than inhabiting characters. The direction is pedestrian at best, with no visual style or comedic timing to salvage the aimless screenplay.

What truly sinks the film is its inability to commit to any single narrative thread. We're juggling family disappointment, love stories, fake backstories about imprisonment, and wedding drama—yet none of it lands because the writing treats each element as an afterthought. The supposedly "interesting" twist about Karan's brother Tommy isn't interesting; it's contrived and deflates whatever credibility the story had built. The film wants to be both a heartfelt family drama and a romantic comedy, succeeding at neither. Even by the modest standards of contemporary Hindi cinema, this is sloppy filmmaking that wastes its premise and its audience's time.

Storyline

So there's this guy Yograj who's a retired cop living in Punjab with his son Varun. The thing is, Varun studied in Mauritius and absolutely loves it there—he's basically refusing to come back home and help with the farm. His dad is pretty frustrated with him for looking down on village life. When Varun heads back to Mauritius after his visit, Yograj is left feeling pretty disappointed and angry about the whole situation.

While Varun's hanging out in Mauritius with his buddy Karan, he bumps into this girl named Riya at a wedding. Riya's got her own family drama going on—her mom is into all these trendy things while her dad's disabled, and Riya doesn't really want to get married because she doesn't want to leave her father. Varun tells Riya that he's also lost his parents and has been searching for them, so he gets what it's like to have family complications. The two end up connecting, and their parents are cool with them getting together, so they actually get married!

Meanwhile, Karan—Varun's buddy—is dating this girl named Sonam, and she's pretty keen on getting married. Karan's hoping his brother Tommy, who just got back from the US, can help convince Sonam's parents to approve of their relationship. But here's where things get interesting—Tommy's actually just gotten out of prison, not actually back from America or anything like that. Things start getting messy when Varun decides he's not coming back to India, which creates a whole bunch of complications for everyone involved.
