Inspector Zende

Review

6/10Critic Score

Inspector Zende arrives as an ambitious attempt to dramatize a notorious criminal case, oscillating between hard-boiled crime thriller and darkly comedic procedural. Manoj Bajpayee delivers a grounded, committed performance that anchors the entire enterprise, while the supporting cast brings genuine conviction to several key sequences. However, the film's most significant stumbling block is its inability to settle on a consistent tone—the serio-comic sensibility that should energize the narrative instead undermines it, diffusing the gravity of the material. The screenplay struggles to justify the audacity of its own story, leaving viewers with a powerhouse central performance trapped within uneven and often meandering storytelling.

The real issues surface in how the film unfolds. Inspector Zende leans heavily on predictable thriller conventions and circular narrative patterns that prevent it from rising above its intriguing premise. The mixture of historical detail and self-aware humor occasionally lands with impact, but more often feels misaligned and curiously dated—evoking a procedural from decades past rather than a contemporary thriller with a distinct point of view. Scattered moments of genuine wit and unexpected warmth hint at what might have been, yet these glimpses are consistently overwhelmed by sluggish pacing and formulaic plotting. It's a film assembled from promising individual components that never quite coalesce into something cohesive.

Storyline

So there's this really sharp cop named Inspector Zende who's basically a legend because he managed to capture this dangerous serial killer called Carl Bhojraj way back in the day. Fast forward fifteen years, and Zende gets word that Carl has somehow managed to escape from Tihar jail, which is pretty much the worst news possible. Now he's got to jump back into action and track down this criminal before he causes more trouble.

Zende knows exactly who he's dealing with since he'd gone head-to-head with Carl before, so he decides to put together a team of trusted officers to hunt him down. The whole thing becomes this intense cat-and-mouse game where Zende has to use his experience and street smarts to outthink a guy who's proven he's incredibly dangerous. It's set in 1980, and the pressure is definitely on to recapture this guy before he slips through their fingers again.

The story basically follows Zende as he works overtime with his crew to track Carl's movements and bring him back behind bars. With someone this cunning and violent on the loose, every moment counts, and Zende needs to stay one step ahead. It's a thrilling ride watching this seasoned inspector put all his skills to the test against a worthy opponent.
