6/10Critic Score

Haseen Dillruba attempts to blend domestic drama with crime-thriller mechanics, and while the premise of a fractured marriage spiraling into murder mystery has genuine intrigue, the execution stumbles across the finish line. Taapsee Pannu delivers a commendably layered performance as Rani, capturing the character's vulnerability, desperation, and calculated cunning with equal conviction. However, the film gets bogged down by melodramatic flourishes and uneven pacing that undercut the tension. The flashback sequences reveal an emotionally compelling portrait of a woman trapped between her own desires and societal expectations, but the present-day investigation often feels like an afterthought—a plot device that interrupts rather than elevates the core relationship dynamics.

What works best here is the moral ambiguity surrounding every character. Nobody is entirely sympathetic, yet nobody is entirely villainous, which keeps you engaged even when the narrative meanders. Rishu's quiet anguish registers more powerfully than any explosive confrontation ever could. Yet the film's final act struggles to balance its competing tones—it wants to be a juicy character study and a whodunit simultaneously, and in trying to do both, it only half-succeeds at each. The twist-heavy ending feels more like narrative sleight of hand than earned storytelling, leaving you with questions about motivation rather than clarity about consequence.

Storyline

So okay, imagine this—there's this woman, Rani, who's married to this guy Rishu through an arranged setup, right? But here's the thing: she was already heartbroken when she married him because her boyfriend had ditched her. The marriage is awkward and tense from day one, and things get worse when Rishu can't perform on their wedding night. It's honestly so painful to watch because he's genuinely hurt and just shuts her out completely after that.

Then his super charming cousin Neel shows up and—oh my god—Rani falls head over heels for him. Like, she even becomes a non-vegetarian just to impress him by cooking mutton! They have this whole secret romance going on, and she's ready to leave everything for him. But of course, when she tells him she wants to marry him, he gets scared and runs away. The betrayal is real, and when Rishu finds out, he's heartbroken but still somehow protective of her. It's complicated, you know?

Now the present-day mystery kicks in because Rishu's house literally explodes and everyone thinks he's dead. The cops are investigating, and they obviously know about all this messy history between Rani and Rishu and Neel. So you're sitting there wondering what actually happened—was it an accident, or is there something darker going on? The whole movie jumps between past and present, and it keeps you guessing the entire time.
