Mohit Suri's "Half Girlfriend" is a well-intentioned romance that stumbles under the weight of its own narrative confusion, much like the relationship at its core. Arjun Kapoor brings earnest vulnerability to Madhav, effectively capturing the insecurity of a small-town athlete struggling with class differences and linguistic barriers—a premise with genuine potential. However, the film's central conceit, the titular "half girlfriend" arrangement, feels more like a plot device to justify muddled storytelling than an authentic exploration of modern relationship ambiguity. Where films like "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani" seamlessly wove coming-of-age romance with urban sensibilities, this one becomes increasingly melodramatic, particularly in its second half. Shraddha Kapoor is charming but underutilized, relegated to a reactive role rather than being a fully realized character with her own agency and arc.

The film's biggest misstep is how it handles the darker turn in Madhav and Riya's relationship—an uncomfortable sequence that the narrative neither confronts adequately nor justifies thematically. Storyline

So there's this guy Madhav who's a pretty talented basketball player but struggles with English, and he gets into this fancy Delhi college on a sports scholarship. That's where he meets Riya, this wealthy girl who's also there on a sports quota, and they hit it off playing basketball together almost every day. His friends keep pushing him to ask her out, but she keeps shutting him down and says she just wants to be friends with him.

Things get a bit confusing between them because one night after hanging out, Riya actually kisses him, which definitely makes Madhav think there's something more happening. But when he tries to get clarity on where they stand, Riya's really uncomfortable with the question and basically tells him she's not ready to be his actual girlfriend. Instead, she comes up with this weird compromise where she suggests they could be "half girlfriend and half boyfriend" since they're already halfway there anyway.

Unfortunately, things take a pretty dark turn after one of his basketball games when Madhav, feeling pressured by his buddies and frustrated with the confusing situation, does something really regrettable that upsets Riya deeply. Shortly after this incident, she drops a bomb on him by announcing she's leaving college to get married, and despite his desperate attempts to convince her to stay, she goes ahead with her decision and leaves.
