Satirish Kamodia's "Ghanchakkar" arrives as a darkly comedic heist thriller that attempts to deconstruct the criminal mastermind archetype, but stumbles in its execution despite a premise brimming with potential. Emraan Hashmi delivers a surprisingly restrained performance as Sanju, capturing the paranoia and cognitive dissonance of a man unraveling under pressure, while Vidya Balan provides solid counterweight as the increasingly exasperated Neetu. The first half crackles with genuine intrigue—the amnesia-driven premise offers genuine comedic and dramatic friction—but the film's tonal inconsistency becomes increasingly problematic. Kamodia, whose directorial average sits at 7.0, seems uncertain whether he's making a caper comedy, a psychological thriller, or a domestic drama, and this confusion undermines what could have been a sharper satire on greed and trust.

The narrative spirals into increasingly convoluted suspicion—neighbors, colleagues, even the wife become suspects in Sanju's deteriorating mental state—yet the script never commits to exploring the psychological or philosophical weight of this paranoia. Instead of deepening the mystery, subsequent plot twists feel manufactured rather than earned, and the film's climactic revelations lack the cleverness the setup promises. Storyline

So there's this guy Sanju who's basically a genius at cracking safes, and he's living this pretty laid-back life with his wife Neetu. One day, a couple of criminals approach him with an offer he can't refuse—help them pull off a massive bank heist and he'll never have to worry about money ever again. The three of them manage to steal a huge amount of cash, and Sanju gets stuck with the job of hiding the suitcase full of money while the other two lay low for a few months since they've got criminal records.

Three months roll around and everyone's ready to meet up and divide the loot, but there's a major problem. Sanju's been in a bad accident that messed with his head, and now he can't remember where he stashed the money. His criminal partners aren't too pleased about this development, obviously, so they decide to move into his house and basically keep tabs on him until he remembers. They give him a week to figure it out, which puts him under some serious pressure.

Getting desperate to find clues about where the cash is hidden, Sanju starts suspecting people around him. He notices his old college buddy has suddenly become super wealthy and claims he won the lottery, which seems fishy. He also starts wondering if maybe his wife Neetu might know something about the money's location since she has access to his accounts and knows him pretty well. The whole situation turns into this twisted mystery where nobody's quite sure who to trust.
