5/10Critic Score

There's something achingly beautiful about a story centered on a nine-year-old boy with nothing but dreams and determination, yet "Gattu" struggles to translate that emotional core into something truly compelling on screen. The premise—a parentless child working in a recycling shop while obsessively chasing victory against a legendary black kite—has all the ingredients for a heartwarming underdog narrative that could resonate deeply with audiences. The direction hints at understanding this character's yearning, and there are moments where we glimpse the raw vulnerability of a child willing to fabricate an entire school identity just to get closer to his impossible dream. However, the execution feels scattered; the film attempts to balance too many narrative threads without giving any of them the breathing room they deserve, and the emotional payoff never quite lands with the force that the story deserves.

What ultimately holds "Gattu" back is that despite its sincere intentions, it doesn't fully commit to either the grounded coming-of-age drama or the fantastical adventure it wants to be. The performances capture a certain innocence, but the screenplay lacks the nuance to explore why a child would go to such lengths—we understand the kite obsession, but the film doesn't dig deep enough into what that dream really represents for someone so isolated and vulnerable. The recycling shop backdrop could have been a powerful metaphor for transformation, yet it remains largely superf

Storyline

So there's this kid named Gattu who's only nine years old and doesn't have parents, which is pretty tough. He ends up working for his uncle at a recycling shop, but honestly, he's totally obsessed with kite flying. There's this one specific kite called Kali that's black and has this amazing winning streak in competitions, and Gattu is determined to beat it no matter what.

Because he's so focused on this goal of defeating Kali, Gattu comes up with this wild plan to pretend he's actually a student at some fancy, well-known school. It's kind of a crazy scheme, but he's hoping that by creating this fake identity and impressing all the kids there, he'll somehow get closer to making his dream come true.

What makes the story interesting is that Gattu's juggling all these different parts of his life – working at the recycling business, keeping up this fake school persona, and constantly thinking about that black kite. It's basically about a kid who's willing to go to extreme lengths to achieve what he really wants, even if it means living a lie.
