4/10Critic Score

Fugly stumbles through what could have been a gritty thriller about consequences and moral decay, but instead lands as a half-baked cautionary tale that mistakes shock value for substance. Anurag Kashyap's direction here lacks the edge and precision he's capable of—the film meanders through its setup, squandering genuine tension with clumsy exposition and characters who feel like they're reading off cue cards rather than inhabiting a crisis. The central premise has teeth: four privileged kids cross a line trying to play vigilantes, and the spiral that follows should be devastating. Instead, we get melodrama that doesn't earn its emotional beats and a 24-hour countdown that feels arbitrary rather than urgent. The performances are scattered—some actors seem to understand the gravity of the scenario while others play it like a college drama project gone wrong.

What truly derails this film is the inconsistent tone and sloppy execution in the third act. The ransom subplot feels grafted on from a different script, and by the time we reach the climax, you're no longer invested in whether these characters deserve their fate or redemption. There are moments—brief flickers where the film acknowledges how quickly privilege can evaporate and how complicity breeds tragedy—but they're buried under lazy writing and uninspired filmmaking. For a story about four friends facing their darkest hour, there's surprisingly little texture or authenticity to their panic, their bonds, or their moral

Storyline

So there's this tight group of four friends—Dev, Devika, Gaurav, and Aditya—who are basically inseparable. Gaurav happens to be the Chief Minister's son, which comes with all sorts of perks and connections, but he's honestly kind of a loose cannon who's always getting into messy situations. When a creepy local shopkeeper named Nunu sexually harasses Devika, the friends decide to take matters into their own hands and confront him in a pretty intense way that goes way further than they originally planned.

Things spiral out of control when they end up putting Nunu in their car trunk to scare him, but then they get stopped by a corrupt cop named Chautala on the highway. The situation quickly becomes dangerous, and what happens next completely changes everything for the group. Suddenly they're caught up in something way bigger and scarier than any of them bargained for.

Now the friends find themselves in serious trouble with a massive ransom demand hanging over their heads and only 24 hours to figure it out. Gaurav's stuck between a rock and a hard place because asking his dad for help would blow up his family's entire political career, so the four of them have to scramble to find a way out of this nightmare on their own.
