5/10Critic Score

There's a kernel of genuine tragedy buried in *Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka*, but director Rajesh Khanna seems more interested in piling on melodrama than exploring what could have been a deeply moving love story. The premise—a woman sacrificing her happiness because she believes she's going blind, only to discover the diagnosis was wrong—had the potential to be heartbreaking and cathartic. Instead, the film drowns itself in implausible twists: medical mix-ups, convenient deaths, kidnappings that feel tacked on, and a heroine who pretends blindness out of nobility when honest conversation might actually serve the story better. Aruna's character, played with earnest conviction, deserves a screenplay that trusts the audience's intelligence. The central emotional conflict—Vishal's misjudgment and his eventual understanding of her sacrifice—should have been the film's anchor, but it gets lost in a sea of contrivances that undermine rather than deepen our connection to her pain.

What saves this from being entirely hollow is the chemistry between the leads and their willingness to inhabit these characters' desperation, even when the plot mechanics creak loudly. There are moments—particularly when Aruna first discovers her sight has returned—where genuine pathos breaks through. But too often, the film prioritizes spectacle and shock value over the quiet, crushing reality of what these characters endure. The rescue sequence feels especially out of place, introducing a villain we barely know

Storyline

Vishal and Aruna are absolutely smitten with each other, but then Dr. Mathur drops a bomb—Aruna's got optic atrophy and she'll be blind in six months! Devastated and refusing to burden Vishal, who's already juggling his disabled mother, she bolts and marries her older boss Anand Kumar instead. Vishal's left completely bewildered, thinking she's betrayed him for wealth and security.

Six months later, terrified Aruna faints expecting total darkness, but plot twist—the original diagnosis was wrong thanks to a medical strike mix-up; her eyesight's perfectly fine! Then she discovers Anand's daughter Sonia is in love with Vishal, so noble Aruna decides to sacrifice her own happiness and tries pushing him toward Sonia. When Sonia overhears and realizes what's happening, she desperately tries to fix things, but Anand dies in an accident and injured Aruna pretends to be blind to keep Vishal and Sonia together.

Sonia eventually spills the beans about Aruna's massive sacrifice, and Vishal's heart breaks realizing how badly he misjudged her! But before they can reunite, a sleazy guy named Prakash kidnaps Aruna—cue the epic rescue where Vishal and Sonia fight off the goons and save her. Finally, after all that chaos and heartbreak, Aruna and Vishal get married and actually get their happy ending!
