Mehul Sujanani's *Ek Hasina Thi* is a revenge thriller that succeeds primarily through the sheer force of its central betrayal—a setup so cunningly orchestrated that it demands our attention even when the film's execution wavers. The first half moves with genuine momentum, establishing Sarika's ordinariness and vulnerability before systematically dismantling her life. Urmila Matondkar delivers a nuanced performance here, conveying the slow-dawning horror of recognizing one's own naiveté. The betrayal itself—engineered by both lover and legal system—hits with the weight it deserves, and for these stretches, the film earns its narrative promise. Emraan Hashmi plays Karan with appropriate slickness, though the character remains somewhat surface-level; what matters is that we believe Sarika believed in him.

However, the second half, where Sarika transforms from victim to avenger, becomes considerably less assured. The revenge sequences oscillate between thriller convention and melodrama, occasionally tipping into the latter without the stylistic control needed to make such shifts feel intentional. Storyline

So there's this independent woman named Sarika living in Mumbai who works at a travel agency, and she meets this charming guy Karan. After some initial hesitation, she falls for him and they start dating. One day, Karan asks her to do him a favor—just host one of his friends for a couple of hours since the guy is new to the city. Sarika agrees, thinking it's no big deal, but things take a dark turn when the friend leaves behind his suitcase and asks if he can pick it up later.

That same evening, Sarika catches news on TV that leaves her completely stunned—the guy who was just at her place is actually a wanted criminal! Panicked, she calls Karan and he tells her to get rid of the suitcase immediately. But the moment she steps out with it, the police are waiting, and she gets arrested on the spot. Now Karan's telling her to trust his lawyer and keep his name out of everything to protect his business reputation, so she goes along with it.

The lawyer convinces Sarika that if she confesses, the judge will go easy on her since she's got a clean record. He even suggests the judge is already in on this plan and will give her a light sentence. Sarika believes him and makes the confession, but then she gets hit with seven years in prison without parole. That's when it clicks—she's been completely betrayed by both Karan and the lawyer, and she realizes she's been used as a pawn to shield Karan from the law.
