4/10Critic Score

This is the kind of film that mistakes sentimentality for depth and relies on the audience's exhaustion rather than genuine storytelling craft. "Ek Din Bahu Ka" treads the well-worn path of the victimized daughter-in-law narrative, except it offers nothing new—no sharp observations about patriarchy, no nuanced exploration of family dynamics, just a straightforward tale of cruelty followed by rescue. The performances are serviceable at best; the actresses playing Jannat and Salma slip into cartoon villainy without an ounce of complexity, while our heroine Zeenat spends most of the runtime looking tragic and noble. The direction is pedestrian, hitting every expected beat with the subtlety of a sledgehammer.

What's particularly galling is how the film frames Rashid's kindness as salvation rather than what it actually is—the bare minimum of human decency elevated to heroic status. The narrative suggests that a woman's suffering is only made bearable by a man's intervention, that she needs a brother-in-law and his wife to validate her existence and fight her battles. There's no arc of self-actualization here, no moment where Zeenat reclaims her power; instead, she's simply transferred from one set of hands to another, from cruelty to "loyalty." The writing is lazy, the emotional beats are manufactured, and worst of all, the film has nothing meaningful to say about the very real issues it touches upon. It's melodrama masquerading as social commentary.

Storyline

Zeenat walks into her new home as a bride, ready to start fresh, but her mother-in-law Jannat and sister-in-law Salma have other plans—they're determined to make her life miserable with their constant criticism and cruelty. Every day brings a fresh humiliation, every task an impossible test of her patience and spirit. She's drowning in a household that feels hostile at every turn.

But Rashid, her brother-in-law, refuses to watch his family destroy this kind-hearted woman—he stands by her side when no one else will, offering support and genuine kindness that slowly chips away at the darkness surrounding her. His compassion becomes her lifeline, and when he marries the gentle Nishat, she finally finds an ally in the family. Suddenly, the odds shift.

With Rashid and Nishat in her corner, Zeenat's world transforms completely—the toxicity that once suffocated her begins to dissolve as their love and loyalty prove stronger than Jannat and Salma's bitterness. She discovers her own strength in this newfound family unity and finally gets the respect and warmth she deserves. It's such a beautiful reminder that sometimes all you need is one person to believe in you!
