5/10Critic Score

There's an earnest charm to *Ek Bechara* that prevents it from being entirely dismissible, even as the narrative lurches between domestic comedy and melodramatic intrigue with uneven pacing. The film's central conceit—a mismatched arranged marriage that gradually becomes genuine—has legs, and when director keeps focus on Rajan and Kavita's relationship, there's a touching sincerity to their arc. The performances, particularly in quieter moments between the leads, suggest actors trying to ground what is ultimately a contrived plot. However, the introduction of impostor relatives and gang conspiracies destabilizes whatever emotional investment the first half has built. The tonal whiplash from rom-com to action-thriller feels unmotivated, and the final showdown, while technically competent, plays as obligatory rather than organic to the story we've been following.

Where *Ek Bechara* stumbles most noticeably is in its screenplay's ambition outpacing its execution. The conspiracy subplot dilutes rather than elevates the central romance, and the loyal secretary device feels borrowed from a different, more cynical film altogether. Director shows competence in staging scenes—the hill station encounter has genuine tension—but lacks the deftness needed to weave these disparate elements into a cohesive whole. That said, the film earns credit for attempting something more complex than a straightforward love story, even if the attempt results in narrative bloat rather than enrichment. It

Storyline

Rajan's dying father sends him to the city to find work with the wealthy Rai Bahadur Mohan, and when he arrives, Mohan welcomes him like family. But Mohan's daughter Kavita despises this village buffoon, especially when her engagement falls through because Mohan refuses to sign over his property to her ex-fiancé's family. Desperate to keep the peace, Mohan asks Rajan to marry Kavita instead—and though she agrees reluctantly, the newlyweds live separate lives, with Kavita secretly meeting her ex-fiancé Shekhar.

When Kavita runs off to a hill station with Shekhar under false pretenses, he attempts to assault her, but Rajan arrives just in time to save her, and suddenly she sees him differently. Their newfound respect shatters instantly when strangers show up claiming to be Mohan's real wife and daughter, accusing Rajan of being a traitor—and despite his protests, he's thrown out onto the street. The conspiracy deepens when Shekhar's gang shoots Mohan, and everyone assumes the worst when he disappears, leaving Rajan to uncover the entire scheme with Mohan's loyal secretary.

Rajan tracks down Shekhar's gang and discovers the impostor wife was forced into the deception, but he and his ally get captured anyway. Mohan resurfaces in disguise to free them, and after a thrilling showdown where Shekhar kidnaps Kavita one last time, Rajan and Mohan team up to rescue her and bring down the villain once and for all. Justice served, love wins, and this village boy transforms from laughingstock to hero!
