"Dukaan" arrives with an ambitious premise—exploring surrogacy through the lens of a woman's reinvention and the moral quicksand it creates. Director Rishab Ojha attempts to mine genuine emotional conflict from the collision between contractual obligation and maternal instinct, and there are moments where the film grazes something raw and true. The supporting cast, particularly in scenes depicting the sisterhood between surrogates, brings authenticity to what could have been reductive character work. However, the narrative frequently defaults to melodrama when it should lean into moral ambiguity. The lead performance, while committed, struggles to navigate the tonal shifts—swinging between hollow detachment and overwrought vulnerability without finding the nuanced middle ground the role demands. The second act drags considerably, padding runtime with scenes that merely repeat emotional beats rather than deepen them.

The film's central flaw is structural: it treats surrogacy as a plot device rather than a genuine exploration of bodily autonomy and systemic desperation. Storyline

A woman sheds her old identity like worn skin, choosing a new name to reinvent herself in a world that demands she be someone different. But reinvention cannot erase the wounds of loss—a tragedy has poisoned her against motherhood itself, leaving her hollow where warmth should live. Then, unexpectedly, a man and his young daughter slip into her carefully constructed solitude, and she discovers that perhaps belonging to someone else's broken family might be the salvation she never sought.

Desperate for solid ground beneath her feet, she becomes a vessel for life itself, renting out her body and her time to others who hunger for what she can provide. Among the other women who walk this same shadowed path, she finds an unexpected sisterhood, a place where her choices don't feel quite so lonely. Yet the world of surrogacy, for all its clinical promises, cannot shield her from the most human of all complications—the bonds that form when you carry a life inside you.

The moment arrives when she cannot let go, when the child she nurtured becomes something she cannot surrender. What began as a transaction of economics and desperation transforms into a collision of hearts, each one convinced they are right, each one ready to fight for what they believe they deserve.
