Detective Sherdil

Review

5.5/10Critic Score

Detective Sherdil reaches for the charm of modern whodunits but finds itself caught between tones, ultimately delivering a film that prioritizes spectacle over substance. Diljit Dosanjh carries much of the load with his natural charisma and comic instincts, though his character gradually veers toward caricature rather than the grounded detective figure the story needs. The supporting ensemble, including Diana Penty, is let down by undercooked characterization that fails to generate genuine tension around the central mystery. What results feels more like a padded television episode than a carefully constructed feature film—the narrative flatness extends throughout, collapsing even potentially intriguing character moments into one-dimensional turns.

The film does find occasional footing when it leans fully into absurdist logic and, to its credit, the twist avoids the throwaway cynicism plaguing similar ensemble comedies by acknowledging real human vulnerability beneath the chaos. Dosanjh's inherent likability sustains portions of the runtime, and there are isolated moments where the tonal balance clicks. Yet these scattered successes cannot mask the screenplay's structural shortcomings. The mystery itself lacks the clever scaffolding needed to justify its labyrinthine setup, and the humour registers inconsistently, leaving the entire enterprise feeling half-baked rather than deliberately playful.
