Madhur Bhandarkar's *Dedh Ishqiya* is a film that understands the peculiar charm of small-time crooks and the baroque world of Lucknowi poetry with equal affection. The double romance at its heart—one born from calculated deception, the other from genuine infatuation—creates a narrative tension that mostly holds despite occasional slack pacing. Naseeruddin Shah delivers a masterclass in world-weary charisma as Khaalujaan, channeling a man perpetually one step ahead of catastrophe, while Arshad Warsi brings an endearing earnestness to Babban's fumbling romance. Madhuri Dixit, in a surprisingly substantial role, carries herself with the weariness of old privilege meeting new vulnerability, grounding what could have been a one-dimensional widow into something genuinely lived-in.

Where the film stumbles is in its tonal inconsistency—it cannot quite decide whether it wants to be a heist thriller, a romantic comedy, or a character study, and the seams show. The climax, in particular, feels rushed and deflates the careful tension built across two hours. Yet Bhandarkar demonstrates a real affection for his misfits and their world; the Lucknow setting becomes almost a character itself, rendered in warm golds and shadowed courtyards. The poetry contests, while occasionally indulgent, serve a genuine thematic purpose about the masks we wear and the truths we hide beneath them. This is not a perfect film, but it is an interesting one—ambitious in its refusal to simplify its characters a

Storyline

So there's this pair of crooks—an older guy named Khaalujaan and his nephew Babban—who pull off this elaborate jewelry heist by dressing up fancy and pretending to be nobility. Things go sideways during their getaway, they lose the necklace, get separated, and Khaalujaan ends up hurt. Babban gets caught by their boss, who's absolutely furious and basically gives him an impossible task: find both his uncle and the necklace, or else. It's pretty intense stuff.

Fast forward a few months and Babban finally tracks down his uncle, only to discover he's now hanging around this fancy poetry gathering organized by this beautiful widowed noblewoman. The whole event is supposedly set up according to her late husband's wishes, and the prize for winning the poetry contest is absolutely wild—the winner gets to marry the widow and become the ruler of her kingdom. Khalujaan's definitely got plans brewing here, but he's gotta convince everyone he's actually a legitimate nobleman first.

Here's where it gets complicated though—the second Babban sees the widow's gorgeous maid, he completely forgets about the whole mission. He's head over heels instantly, which means he's not exactly rushing to drag his uncle away. Meanwhile, Khalujaan's got his hands full trying to pull off this whole aristocrat act and hopefully win that poetry competition. You can already tell this situation's about to become a total mess with everyone's conflicting agendas crashing into each other.
