Darna Zaroori Hai

Review

5/10Critic Score

Darna Zaroori Hai operates as an anthology film with an intriguing framing device—five children challenged to endure supernatural tales from a mysterious woman—that promised genuine scares wrapped in a meta-cinematic premise. The opening story featuring Satish, a film devotee whose Friday night ritual becomes a brush with the supernatural, demonstrates occasional narrative cleverness, particularly in its unreliable perspective twist. However, the execution falters considerably. Director Ram Gopal Varma's touch, evident throughout, struggles to maintain atmospheric tension; the stories feel rushed and tonally inconsistent, oscillating between genuine dread and unintentional camp. The cinematography leans heavily on predictable jump scares rather than psychological horror, and the dialogue often undermines moments meant to unsettle rather than entertain.

The film's box office performance of ₹10.65 crores with a +22% ROI suggests modest audience reception—hardly a ringing endorsement given the genre's traditionally lower budgets. Varma's recent work has averaged 4.5/10, and this installment doesn't substantially elevate that trajectory. What works intermittently—the Satish segment's narrative trickery, occasional production design choices—is overwhelmed by what doesn't: shallow character development, predictable scares, and a framing narrative that never justifies its own existence. The ambition to create an engaging horror-thriller is evident, but the craft required to sustain

Storyline

So basically, this movie is about five kids who wander into the woods and stumble upon this creepy old house. They meet this mysterious old woman living there who's totally down to tell them a bunch of spooky stories. But here's the catch—they're all trying to prove who can listen to all six tales without getting absolutely terrified. It's like a horror competition, and honestly, the setup itself sounds pretty fun.

The first story she tells them is about this guy named Satish who's basically a movie fanatic. Every single Friday, he's at the theater for the last showing, like clockwork. But one particular Friday the 13th, his mom seriously warns him not to take a shortcut through the graveyard because it's supposed to be an unlucky night when weird supernatural stuff happens. Satish basically rolls his eyes at her and goes anyway because he's committed to his movie night tradition.

So Satish makes it to the cinema just fine, does his whole routine with snacks and all that, watches his film, and heads back home. But on the way back, things get way more intense, and that's when his night takes a seriously dark turn. The way his story unfolds will totally mess with your head once you realize what actually happened versus what he thought was happening!
