5/10Critic Score

Varun Dhawan brings an infectious energy to Raju, the humble railway porter thrust into an elaborate masquerade, and there's something genuinely likeable about watching him navigate the chaos of pretending to be a wealthy prince. Govinda's blueprint from the original is followed faithfully—perhaps too faithfully—but what could have been a clever commentary on class and deception instead becomes a vehicle for slapstick that feels more obligatory than organic. Sara Ali Khan's Sarah deserves better material; she's bright and game, but the film reduces her to a pawn in Jai Kishen's revenge fantasy rather than giving her agency in her own love story. David Dhawan's direction relies on the muscle memory of his previous comedies, hitting the expected beats without ever making us feel the emotional stakes underneath the costume changes and mistaken identities.

The real tragedy isn't that the con eventually unravels—it's that the film never asks what Raju and Sarah's relationship actually means once the truth emerges. There's a touching moment buried somewhere in this narrative about two people from different worlds choosing each other despite their circumstances, but instead, we get elaborate set pieces and rushed resolutions. The chemistry between the leads sparkles enough to remind us what could have been, and the supporting cast throws themselves into the mayhem with admirable commitment. Yet for all its technical polish and box office success, *Coolie No. 1* remains a remake tha

Storyline

So basically, this matchmaker guy named Jai Kishen gets totally disrespected by this rich snob named Jeffrey because the groom's family he brought wasn't wealthy enough. Jai Kishen decides he's going to get revenge by playing the ultimate prank on Jeffrey, and that's when he meets Raju, this humble railway porter who's actually pretty well-known and respected among his buddies for being brave and heroic.

Jai Kishen sees a photo of Jeffrey's daughter Sarah and gets this brilliant but mischievous idea—what if he convinces Raju to pretend he's a rich prince from Singapore? With help from his buddy Deepak, they pull off this elaborate con, and Sarah totally falls for it. Plus, Sarah's sister ends up liking Deepak too, so everyone seems happy on the surface.

The thing is, Jai Kishen manages to actually get Raju and Sarah married without Jeffrey knowing the truth about who Raju really is. After the wedding, Raju has to keep up the act at home, making excuses about why he's suddenly poor and living like a regular guy. Then everything gets super complicated when Jeffrey shows up unexpectedly and spots Raju working at the train station, realizing he's been totally duped.
