5/10Critic Score

Madhur Bhandarkar's *Chalk n Duster* arrives with admirable intentions—to champion the undervalued teaching profession—but stumbles in its execution, oscillating between earnest social commentary and melodramatic excess. Juhi Chawla and Shabana Azmi share genuine chemistry as the beleaguered educators Vidya and Jyoti, and their performances anchor the film with quiet dignity, particularly in scenes exploring the emotional toll of institutional apathy. However, the narrative's pivot toward a quiz show climax feels contrived and undermines the grounded realism the first half establishes. Nisha Volkova's antagonistic principal is one-dimensionally sketched—less a character than a caricature of corporate callousness—which dilutes the film's critique of educational commercialization. Where films like *Rang De Basanti* used popular entertainment as a vehicle for meaningful social awakening, *Chalk n Duster* reduces complex labor issues to a game show spectacle.

The film's heart lies in its quieter moments—Vidya's heart attack serving as a rupture point, the teachers' collective resistance—but Bhandarkar's direction lacks the subtlety to elevate these themes beyond surface-level sentimentality. The cinematography bathes the school in institutional grays and blues, visually reinforcing the oppressive atmosphere, yet the tonal shifts between tragedy and forced uplift jar rather than cohere. While the film deserves credit for centering female protagonists in a pedagogical struggle, it

Storyline

So basically, there's this wonderful senior teacher named Vidya who's been happily working at a pretty average school for years under a kind principal who actually cares about her staff. Life is good—teachers get their tea, they're treated fairly, the whole place runs like a well-oiled machine. But then everything goes sideways when a new principal named Kamini gets hired, and she's basically the complete opposite of what everyone needs. She's all about turning this humble middle-class school into something fancy and impressive, but her methods are totally ruthless and cold-hearted.

Things get pretty crazy as Kamini starts making all these harsh changes—no more comfortable chairs in classrooms, no free tea, teachers getting shuffled around between different subjects like they're chess pieces. It's honestly awful, and poor Vidya ends up having a heart attack because of all the stress and unfair treatment. But here's the thing—Vidya's got a loyal friend and fellow teacher named Jyoti who decides she's not going to stand for this nonsense and is ready to fight back against Kamini and the board members who are backing her.

So Jyoti comes up with this clever plan to use a TV show to get public support for their cause, showing everyone how important and undervalued teachers really are. The situation escalates when Vidya recovers and she and Jyoti get the chance to compete in this high-stakes quiz show where the prize is huge—but there's also a massive risk involved. They basically put everything on the line for a shot at winning big and proving their point.
