Ashutosh Gowariker's "Bhindi Baazaar Inc." attempts to weave together crime, domestic drama, and social realism in the underbelly of Mumbai, but the execution falters under the weight of its own ambitions. The film's premise—tracking power struggles within a pickpocket gang following a tragic death—has genuine potential, and there are moments where the gritty authenticity of Bhindi Bazar bleeds through the screen with real texture. However, the narrative becomes unwieldy, juggling too many threads: the love triangle, gang warfare, a flu outbreak, and Shabana's machinations all compete for attention without achieving meaningful synthesis. The performances, while earnest, struggle against a script that doesn't give them enough psychological depth to anchor the increasingly melodramatic turns.

Where the film stumbles most is in its tonal inconsistency. Gowariker seems uncertain whether he's making a character study, a crime saga, or a morality tale, and the result is a diffuse experience that rarely lands with impact. The gang dynamics, which should be the film's spine, feel superficial; characters make decisions that don't always track emotionally. The female characters—particularly Bano and Shabana—deserve more nuance than the script provides, reducing their agency to circumstance. There are individual scenes that work, moments of genuine tension or pathos, but they're surrounded by unnecessary exposition and plotting that weighs the narrative down rather than propels it forw

Storyline

So there's this guy named Mamu who runs a pretty rough operation in the Bhindi Bazar area of Mumbai. He's basically a gang leader with a crew of pickpockets who work the crowded streets and buses, stealing from unsuspecting people. His wife Bano is stuck handling all the household responsibilities, and when things get too overwhelming, she brings her cousin Shabana to come live with them and help out.

Things get pretty complicated pretty quickly when Shabana shows up. Bano starts noticing that her cousin has eyes for Mamu, and she feels helpless to do anything about it. The situation escalates when Mamu and Shabana get intimate, and tragedy strikes that really shakes things up for everyone involved.

With Mamu out of the picture, everything falls into chaos. There's a rival gang leader named Shankar Pandey who sees an opportunity to make his move and take control, which leads to some serious gang warfare. Meanwhile, this nasty flu outbreak is spreading through the city, adding more tension to the mix. A guy named Fateh steps up wanting to take over leadership, and Shabana's got her own agenda too, especially when it comes to looking after the now-widowed Bano.
