Anil Sharma's *Bala* arrives as an unexpectedly sharp social commentary wrapped in the familiar packaging of a romantic comedy, though its execution proves messier than its ambitions. The film opens with a genuinely uncomfortable premise—mocking a bald teacher, colorism against Latika—that feels startlingly honest about how our society conditions young men into toxic beauty standards. Sharma doesn't shy away from showing Bala as fundamentally flawed, which elevates the material beyond the usual "hero redemption" arc. Ayushmann Khurrana delivers a nuanced performance, balancing comedy with genuine vulnerability; he resists the temptation to make baldness a punchline and instead mines real existential dread from the character's insecurities. Where the film stumbles is in its second half, when the central conflict—a misdirected text message before the wedding—devolves into contrived misunderstandings that undermine the serious social critique established earlier. The tonal whiplash between satirizing fairness cream culture and playing traditional rom-com games feels jarring.

What's most frustrating is how *Bala* doesn't commit fully to either its reformist impulse or its entertainment obligations. Bhumi Pednekar and Yami Gautam are capable actresses saddled with one-dimensional roles—Latika exists primarily as a reward for Bala's redemption arc, while Pari functions as little more than a pretty obstacle. Storyline

So basically, this movie starts with a flashback to 2005 where this kid named Bala is super into his hair and totally mocks his bald teacher along with his classmates. He's also kind of a jerk to this brilliant girl named Latika just because she has darker skin, and he only cares about impressing a fair-skinned girl named Shruti. The whole thing sets up how messed up society's standards are when it comes to beauty and skin tone, especially when it comes to marriage prospects.

Fast forward fourteen years and karma kind of catches up with Bala because he's dealing with serious premature baldness. He's working as a fairness cream salesman during the day and doing stand-up comedy at night, trying to deal with his insecurities. His dad tries to help him out by giving him a wig and telling him that external appearance doesn't define a person's worth, which is actually pretty sweet advice that Bala takes to heart.

Things get interesting when Bala finally manages to meet and date this gorgeous, fair-skinned model named Pari Mishra, and they actually decide to get married. But right before the wedding, Bala starts feeling guilty about keeping his baldness a secret, so he tries to come clean through a text message. However, the message gets sent to the wrong person, which creates this whole mess of misunderstandings and complications leading up to the wedding.
