7.8/10Critic Score

Sujoy Ghosh delivers a sleek, intelligent thriller that finally proves Bollywood can do the whodunit genre justice without resorting to melodrama or contrived twists. "Badla" is essentially a two-character chamber piece dressed in London sophistication, and it works precisely because the director trusts his audience's intelligence and his actors' ability to carry 90 minutes with minimal external action. Amitabh Bachchan brings gravitas and a razor-sharp wit to Badal, while Taapsee Pannu strips away her usual charm to reveal the brittle desperation of a woman caught in a moral quicksand. The chemistry between them crackles, and every revelation feels earned rather than manufactured—a rarity in Hindi cinema where twist endings usually feel like cheap gotchas designed to mask lazy storytelling.

What truly impressed me is how Ghosh orchestrates the narrative layering without ever losing clarity. Each twist doesn't betray what came before but rather recontextualizes it, forcing you to mentally rewind and reassess. The blackmail subplot, the hit-and-run, the elderly couple—these aren't random plot devices thrown at the wall; they're carefully interlocked mechanisms that create genuine moral ambiguity. Yes, the film occasionally indulges in expository dialogue, and the final act's revelation about Rani and Nirmal strains credibility slightly, but these are minor quibbles in what is fundamentally a tight, intelligent thriller that respects its viewers.

Storyline

So there's this successful businesswoman named Naina living it up in London, but her life takes a dramatic turn when she gets arrested for murdering her boyfriend Arjun. She's got a lawyer who brings in this hotshot defense attorney named Badal to figure out what's really going on. They spend an intense evening together piecing together the story, and it becomes clear that Naina and Arjun were caught up in some serious blackmail scheme involving their secret relationship.

During their meeting, Badal starts digging deeper because something doesn't add up about Naina's version of events. He pushes her about a mysterious young guy who vanished near the hotel where everything went down. Eventually, Naina comes clean about a darker secret from months before—she and Arjun had hit another car while driving, and the crash killed a guy named Sunny. Instead of reporting it, Arjun talked her out of it, and they did something pretty terrible to cover their tracks.

Things get even more complicated when we learn that after the accident, Arjun ran into an elderly couple named Rani and Nirmal who seemed harmless at first. What started as a simple offer to help with car trouble and a cup of tea turned into something way more sinister. As the pieces of the puzzle start coming together, it becomes clear that Naina and Arjun's past mistakes might be connected to everything that's happening to them now.
