7/10Critic Score

There's a beautiful, aching sincerity at the heart of *Axone* that lingers long after the credits roll—a film that transforms a simple cooking mission into something far more meaningful about belonging, identity, and the fierce love we show our friends. Director Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury crafts a story that feels intimate and deeply personal, following three young women from Northeast India as they battle not just a grumpy landlord and cultural prejudice, but their own doubts about whether they deserve to claim space for their traditions in a city that often makes them feel like outsiders. The performances carry genuine warmth; you believe in the friendship binding these characters together, and you feel their frustration when the world keeps telling them to be smaller, quieter, less aromatic. The film's greatest strength lies in how it uses a humble dish as a metaphor for so much more—dignity, persistence, and the right to celebrate who you are.

Where *Axone* stumbles slightly is in its rhythm; the escalating obstacles, while thematically resonant, sometimes feel like they're being stacked on top of each other rather than organically unfolding. The romantic subplot involving Shiv adds texture but occasionally diverts energy away from what makes the core story so compelling. These are minor missteps in what is otherwise a thoughtful, human film that refuses to be cynical about its characters' dreams. The resolution carries earned emotion precisely because you've watched these

Storyline

A group of young migrants from Northeast India living together in Delhi rallies around their friend Minam's upcoming wedding. When Minam is suddenly called away for a job interview, her roommates Upasana, Chanbi, and Zorem take it upon themselves to prepare axone, a traditional dish essential to the celebration. However, their plans hit an immediate snag when the building's strict landlord and his mother-in-law forbid any cooking of pungent dishes or parties on the premises.

Determined not to let their friend down, the trio navigates a series of obstacles as they hunt for ingredients and scout alternative cooking locations. They enlist help from Shiv, the landlord's son and Zorem's friend, whose own romantic entanglements add another layer of chaos to their efforts. The mounting pressure threatens to derail everything as the wedding date draws near and complications pile up faster than solutions.

With time running out and spirits flagging, the friends make a final push to pull off the impossible. Their resourcefulness and determination face their ultimate test as they race against the clock to deliver both the axone and a proper wedding celebration for Minam, navigating the cultural and practical clash between their Northeast Indian traditions and Delhi's urban constraints.
