Review

5/10Critic Score

This is exactly the kind of film that reveals the gulf between box office success and actual filmmaking craft. Yes, "Aunty No. 1" made money—made it handsomely, in fact—but let's be brutally honest: the film is a structural mess held together by cross-dressing gimmicks and the sheer force of its lead's comedic energy. The premise starts promisingly enough with the wealthy-faker angle, a reliable setup that could've been mined for genuine satire on materialism and class. Instead, director Sooraj Barjatya (whose track record hovers around a mediocre 5.7/10) treats it as mere setup for the "aunt" hijinks, abandoning any real thematic teeth. The performances are enthusiastic—particularly the lead's committed physical comedy in drag—but enthusiasm isn't a substitute for wit. The supporting cast feels like they're in different films entirely, their timing often off, their comic beats landing with the grace of a falling sack of potatoes.

Where the film truly stumbles is in its narrative laziness. The transformation from deception-based rom-com to gender-comedy farce happens so abruptly that it feels less like a creative escalation and more like the writers ran out of ideas and decided to throw everything at the wall. The "real love conquers all" sentiment that supposedly anchors the chaos is so thinly sketched that it becomes an afterthought—a moral fig leaf draped over what is essentially 120 minutes of gags and pratfalls. For a HIT-verdict film (averaging 6.6/10), this plays more

Storyline

Sandhya's hunting for her dream guy, this fairytale prince who'll sweep her off her feet, and Gopi sees his shot! He transforms into the ultra-rich Prince Ranjit Sehgal and suddenly he's got her completely smitten, taking her on dates and charming her with his fake wealth. The whole thing's a blast because Gopi's pulling off this ridiculous charade while actually being broke, but somehow it just works!

Then the truth bombs when Sandhya realizes her prince is actually this broke guy named Gopi, and you'd think it's all over—but nope, they actually fall genuinely for each other! Real love kicks in and suddenly the money doesn't matter anymore, which is genuinely sweet. But here's where it gets absolutely bonkers: Gopi's buddies Abhyankar and Raja need him to do them a massive favor, so he agrees to dress up as an aunt!

Gopi becomes this fake aunt and it's comedy gold because suddenly TWO different guys fall head over heels for "her"! The misunderstandings pile up hilariously as Gopi's stumbling around in a saree trying to keep his cover, meanwhile these guys are competing for his attention. It's pure chaos, but the beauty is that through all this madness, Gopi and Sandhya's real love stands strong and genuine, making the whole wild journey actually mean something!
