Rajesh Khanna's *Arzoo* attempts to tackle disability and love through the lens of a sweeping romantic drama, yet stumbles in its execution despite noble intentions. The premise—a man's fear of rejection after losing his leg, only to discover his beloved's love transcends physical limitation—carries genuine emotional weight, but the film's treatment feels didactic rather than organic. Khanna's direction leans heavily on melodrama, particularly in the second act where Usha's forced engagement drags interminably, diluting the central conflict rather than deepening it. The skiing sequences in Kashmir offer visual respite, reminiscent of *Jab Harry Met Sally*'s location-driven romance, but the film lacks that genre's wit and nuance. Rajesh Khanna's own performance carries sincerity, though the writing doesn't always serve his vulnerability with subtlety.

What *Arzoo* gets right is its refusal to make disability the villain of the narrative—by the climax, Gopal's self-imposed exile, not his amputation, becomes the true obstacle. However, the journey there is cluttered with contrivances: the conveniently timed revelation on the wedding day, the passive acceptance of Usha's agency being trampled by her family, and dialogue that tells rather than shows the film's thematic core. The supporting cast, particularly whoever plays Ramesh, remains largely underdeveloped, missing opportunities for complexity. Compared to Khanna's other works averaging 6.5/10, this film sits uncomfortably be

Storyline

Gopal's a skiing champion living his best life, and when he hits the slopes in Kashmir under the alias Sarju, he meets the gorgeous Usha and sparks absolutely fly! They fall madly in love during those perfect holiday days, and he promises to marry her before heading back to Delhi. But then disaster strikes—a brutal car accident costs him his leg, and suddenly everything changes.

Now Gopal's spiraling because he remembers Usha's cold words about disabled people, how she'd rather die than live that life! So he ghosts her completely, convinced she'll reject him now that he's lost a limb, and he never tells anyone in Delhi about her. Meanwhile, Usha's desperately searching for him, thinking something terrible happened, and when she can't find him, she's basically forced into an engagement with Gopal's best friend Ramesh! It's heartbreaking—she keeps saying no, but her father and everyone around her pressure her into accepting.

Then on the actual wedding day, magic happens when the Kashmiri houseboat owner Mamdhu spills the truth—Sarju and Gopal are the same person! Usha realizes her mystery love is right there all along, and suddenly everything explodes into this incredible emotional climax where Gopal finally understands that real love doesn't care about missing limbs or disability, it just cares about the person you are!
