4/10Critic Score

Apartment squanders a genuinely intriguing premise with lazy execution and a screenplay that mistakes twist-obsession for storytelling. The setup—a flight attendant's paranoia about her new roommate—had legs, but director Balaji Mohan settles for cheap jump scares and implausible plot turns instead of building genuine tension. The performances are serviceable at best; the leads lack the chemistry needed to make their friendship feel authentic before the betrayal kicks in, which means when the "shocking revelations" arrive, we're too detached to care. Madhusudan, the quirky elderly neighbor with his cat, feels like he wandered in from a different, better film entirely—padding that screams "we didn't know how to sustain the main story."

The bigger problem is that the film doesn't trust its audience's intelligence. Every clue is telegraphed from miles away, and the supposed "sinister secrets" unravel with all the credibility of a badly written WhatsApp forward. The psychological thriller elements that could have elevated this into something worthwhile are completely botched—there's no cat-and-mouse game, no genuine moral ambiguity, just predictable beats masquerading as unpredictability. For a film banking entirely on its twist, Apartment fails spectacularly in the one job it needed to do: keep us guessing.

Storyline

Preeti works as a flight attendant and shares a cozy apartment in Mumbai with her boyfriend Karan, along with a quirky elderly neighbor named Madhusudan who's a poet and spends most of his time with his beloved cat. Things take a turn when Preeti's insecurity gets the better of her and she kicks Karan out over suspicions of cheating, only to realize she can't manage the rent alone. Desperate for help, she decides to find a roommate and ends up meeting Neha, a sweet and innocent-seeming girl from a small town who seems like the perfect fit.

At first, the two roommates hit it off wonderfully and become genuine friends. They laugh together, support each other, and Preeti feels like she's finally found someone she can trust and confide in. It seems like everything is working out perfectly for both of them, and their bond grows stronger with each passing day.

But then strange and unsettling things start happening in the apartment that shake Preeti's world. Weird incidents pile up one after another, leaving her confused and paranoid about what's really going on. She begins to wonder if all these troubling events are just bad luck or if there's something more sinister at play—and whether the girl she thought she knew so well might be hiding a dangerous secret.
