5/10Critic Score

"Anuraag" attempts something genuinely ambitious: to weave together themes of disability, sacrifice, and redemption within a romantic drama framework. The central premise—that a blind woman's journey toward sight becomes inseparable from her emotional awakening—has real potential, and there are moments where the film touches something authentic. The relationship between Shivani and Chandan, particularly, carries a poignancy that transcends the melodrama inherent to the material. Where the film stumbles, however, is in its execution of nuance. Chandan's eye donation, meant to be the emotional crescendo, risks feeling manipulative rather than earned; the screenplay leans too heavily on the sacrifice as a plot device to resolve conflicts rather than exploring the psychological and philosophical weight such a decision would carry.

The direction shows awareness of emotional beats but lacks the subtlety to make them land with true force. Shivani's blindness is treated more as a narrative obstacle to overcome than as a lived experience to understand—her sculptures are referenced but never truly integrated into her character arc in meaningful ways. Rajesh's father's eventual acceptance, triggered by her restored sight rather than by any genuine evolution in his values, undermines what could have been a critique of ableism; instead, it reinforces the troubling idea that disability becomes acceptable only once "cured." The performances likely carry the film through its rougher patches

Storyline

Shivani's stuck in an ashram, sculpting her way through blindness with quiet grace, when she meets Chandan, this heartbreaking kid battling cancer who becomes her closest friend. She also falls hard for Rajesh, this guy who genuinely sees her for who she is—literally and figuratively. When he asks his parents for permission to marry her, his mom's totally on board, but his dad? He's a brick wall, shutting down the whole thing because of her disability.

Just when everything feels impossible, an eye specialist drops this incredible possibility—surgery could restore her sight! But here's where it gets emotionally devastating: Chandan, knowing he's running out of time, makes the ultimate sacrifice and donates his eyes to her. It's this gut-wrenching moment that redefines what love and friendship actually mean.

Shivani gets her sight back through Chandan's final gift, and suddenly the whole world opens up to her in ways that go way beyond just seeing colors and faces. Rajesh's dad finally comes around because he can't argue with the profound transformation and the purity of what she's been through. She's not just cured of her blindness—she's been reborn into a life where she can finally build her future with Rajesh, carrying Chandan's memory in her heart forever.
