6.2/10Critic Score

Andaaz arrives as a competent romantic drama that understands the architecture of unrequited love, even if it doesn't always execute with finesse. Akshay Kumar and Priyanka Chopra share an easy chemistry that carries the film through its nostalgic first half—their childhood bonding sequences recall the wistful yearning of films like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, though without Karan Johar's melodic precision. What sets this apart is the willingness to let Raj's confession explode at the worst possible moment, a narrative choice that rejects the sanitized rom-com formula. However, the film's second half, anchored by the Cape Town detour and Jiya's subplot, dilutes rather than deepens the central conflict. Rajkumar Santoshi's direction is functional but uninspired—the gorgeous South African locations feel more like tourism footage than emotional landscape, and the film loses its emotional traction precisely when it should escalate.

The real problem isn't ambition but inconsistency in tone and thematic clarity. Andaaz wants to be both a love story and a meditation on the destructiveness of silence, but it settles into neither with conviction. Priyanka Chopra carries the film's emotional weight with naturalism—her Kajal feels like a real woman discovering truths about herself rather than a plot device—while Akshay's perpetual nice-guy restraint becomes the film's greatest limitation. By the time the resolution arrives, we're left with a film that has said something interesting about vulne

Storyline

So this movie follows Raj, who goes through this whole journey starting from when he's a kid dealing with a broken leg and some serious mental blocks about walking. He meets this super cool, sporty girl named Kajal who's basically a tomboy obsessed with planes, and she helps him get back on his feet—literally and figuratively. They become best friends and end up really close, with everyone around them assuming they'll eventually get together, but Raj's the only one who knows he's actually in love with her.

Fast forward a bunch of years, and Raj finally gets his shot at being a pilot with Air India. He's been waiting for the perfect moment to tell Kajal how he really feels, but surprise surprise—she's already fallen for this super rich businessman guy named Karan. Instead of telling her the truth, Raj just goes along with it and acts like he's totally cool with her marrying Karan. But of course, she finds out about his real feelings at the wedding reception, which makes things really awkward between them.

After everything falls apart, Raj decides he needs a fresh start and moves all the way to Cape Town, South Africa to focus on his career. While he's there trying to move on, he meets this other girl named Jiya who's lively and fun, and she genuinely falls for him because she thinks he's such a good guy. But here's the thing—Raj is still hung up on Kajal and can't seem to let go of his feelings for her, which creates this whole complicated situation.
