Amit Sahni Ki List

Review

5/10Critic Score

Vir Das carries "Amit Sahni Ki List" with the kind of neurotic energy the role demands—his portrayal of a man imprisoned by his own romantic spreadsheet has genuine charm, even when the screenplay doesn't quite deserve it. Das brings specificity to what could have been a one-note character, mining humor from the awkwardness of watching someone sabotage his own dating life. Director Ajay Bahl attempts a premise that's been mined before, but the execution remains serviceable; there's a lightness to the proceedings that prevents the film from becoming entirely unbearable. Where it stumbles is in the script's lazy reliance on the list as a narrative crutch—every complication feels predictable, every "twist" telegraphed from scenes away.

The film's central question—can love be engineered or must it be discovered?—is never explored with any real depth or wit. Instead, we get a parade of women who exist primarily as obstacles to Amit's self-awareness rather than as fully realized characters. The supporting cast doesn't help matters; they feel like they're reading from a romantic comedy template rather than inhabiting actual lives. Bahl's direction is competent but uninspired, hitting every beat you've seen in a dozen similar films without finding a distinctive angle or fresh comedic rhythm to distinguish this entry from the pack.

Storyline

So there's this investment banker guy named Amit who's basically obsessed with finding his ideal woman. He's got this whole list of qualities that his perfect match needs to have—like literally written down somewhere—and he carries it with him everywhere. Vir Das plays this quirky, somewhat neurotic character who just can't seem to let go of what he's looking for, all because of some heartbreak he went through way back when he was younger.

Every time Amit goes on a date, he's secretly playing detective, mentally checking off whether the woman sitting across from him ticks the boxes on his famous list. It's pretty funny watching him try to be casual about it while running through his mental checklist like some kind of romantic spreadsheet. The whole setup is basically setting you up for hilarious situations as he keeps trying to force-fit real women into his imaginary ideal.

The movie basically follows Amit's romantic misadventures as his rigid list-checking approach keeps creating these funny complications and unexpected situations. It's a lighthearted comedy that plays with the idea of whether love can really be planned out and organized like some kind of business deal, or if life has other plans in store for him.
